Throw your cigarette butts in the garbage!

This one goes out to all the smokers (myself included):

Please throw your cigarette butts in the garbage!

While our society has made leaps and bounds in making littering socially unacceptable, littering cigarette butts is still generally accepted.

Did you know that...?

- Cigarette butts take 1-5 years to break down.
- Cigarette butts are not biodegradeable.
- 4.5 trillion cigarette butts are littered worldwide each year.

Every day, I see people throw their butts on the road when there is a garbage can right beside them. Even if there is not a garbage can near you, out your cigarette and hold it in your hand until you find one.

(Also, please make sure to out your cigarette before putting it in the garbage to prevent a fire.)

to throw them in the garbage tho, you have to butt them out.

Posted by petro on Jul-20-2006 17:23:

throwing butts in the garbage is also a nice way to start a fire

Have you tested this? If so, what do you recommend? Continuing to litter?

when i was a kid there were outdoor ashtrays all over toronto. They were either just pits or pits filled with a white sandy material. I guess the government took them away because they are anti tobacco nazis now.

Don't worry, Stephen Harper is going to swoop in on his jet to take all the cigarette butts to safety with him. Everything will be okay!

So we should litter cause it provides people a job? LOL

Thanks Graham. I need to make a conscious effort to throw out my cig butts. I do find it disgusting to see them littered everywhere. I used to always butt out, put the cig into my "litter" pocket in my jacket and wait till a passed a garbage can. But I've gotten too lazy with that the last couple years.

One thing: We need waaaaaaaaaaaay more gorbage recepticles in Toronto.

no i never said that at all. I think you misinterpreted my response. Why worry about cigarette butts? Its not a big deal. But the loss of the ability to smoke in public places is costing a lot of people their job which is why that is something to worry about, not cig butts.

its best not to litter but honestly cig butts are the last thing im worried about in toronto. We need to worry about building a city with interesting buildings and beautifying on a large scale before we should worry about cig butts. Cig butts or not, toronto is a pretty ugly city. Lets change that!

we have a lot already. Those big ugly grey things. Sadly they are nasty. Whoever designed them needs to be shot. Do you really want to touch that nasty panel door everytime you want to throw out a wrapper?

Want to know whats killing toronto? Parking. It stops me from going downtown a lot. I used to go all the time when parking was cheaper/free. But why am i going to pay 5 or 10 bucks on a tues night just to park my car? and the meters now charge 2 or 3 bucks AN HOUR even on a monday night till midnight! F THAT! So these days if im hungry for good food, the suburbs get my business even though the restaurants arent as nice. Even 5 years ago they NEVER charged for parking on the street past 6 oclock and only between 1 and 5 on sundays. And even then i dont remember it ever being more than $1 an hour.

Since when? I comend you on trying to change people's way of thinking, but littering is a huge problem in our throw away society.

Everything here is 'disposable' and it shows. Just look at any street corner, bus stop, or high way off ramp. Garbage everywhere. Considering the number of people we have, the amount of garbage on the streets is amazing.

Canada is one of the most wasteful countries in the world, determined by the amount of garbage per person we create.

Thank you for bringing one more aspect of this to people's attention though.

I love your way of thinking.

Since we have more pressing issues, we shouldn't change what we can when we see it.

Dude, this is something that people can do on a daily baisis which will improve the city, the country. Just because the political system is failing at improving other parts of the city, does not mean we cannot take it upon our selves to solve problems when we see them.

When I moved to Canada my relatives and I agreed that it was very very clean, about 17 years ago. Now I have relatives come from other places in the world and they ask "what happened?". Its a shame for such an advanced nation to let such an easily solvable problem escalate.

The problem is that canadians tend to focus on the petty and stupid things too much. And then they fail to tackle real problems.

Instead of actually doing something about the homeless, health care etc (instead of just throwing money at an already bad system) our politicians instead pass smoking, pitt bull and other inane laws.

I wouldnt be so critical of this idea except thatwe need to fix a whole lot of things that take priority over cig butts on the street.

I for one have noticed where the cig butts tend to usually pile up the most........ in the potholes.

Now there's an analogy if there ever was one.

This isn't the general bitching thread. Start your own thread. Don't hijack.

Exactly. It doesn't take a lot to solve this problem. All people have to do is throw it in the garbage. The way you get this idea into people's heads is you talk about it and confront them about it when they do it.

I'm totally with you Jay no worries. Yes, there are other "larger" issues but this isn't something we need to go talk to politicians about its simple personal awareness to try an not litter. Just as everyone in society can do their small part in changing the "system" we can also do our small part to make our city cleaner.

Agreed again those big grey ADSORES of garbage cans are ugly. But for me the purpose they serve out weighs the negative. THe unfortunate thing for me is the only way the city adds more of these is to allow corporate entities to essentially put up more billboards. And yes there are lots of em in T.O. but even still I think every corner with a stop light should have a place to toss litter into otherwise ppl are tempted to litter. For example in Cape Town, SA they have round plastic ones on EVERY street pole in most areas. Its cheaper than those bigger metal ones and you get way more coverage.

Way off topic Jay. You get points deducted in debates for that.

i recommend the city set up more but out poles around..cos i butt cigarettes out in those if they are there unlike others i see that stand by it and then stomp it out

This is the exact flaw in your thinking.

Throwing away a butt does not take any resources away from solving other problems. If we were trying to get the city to hire people to pick up butts then you would have a valid point, because that money could be used to support other ares of the city. No money is being spent, and no city workers are being used to help the situation. Leave the point alone.

Posted by zokissima on Jul-20-2006 18:33:

Although I admire that there are those few out there considerate enough to think of things such as these, I'd have to say that throwing cigarette butts in garbage is something I disagree with. Not enough people (if that many took it upon themselves in the first place) would take the extre 5 seconds to make certain that a cigarette is REALLY out, before tossing it. On that note, yes, this city does need way more garbage receptacles. There should be one at EVERY TTC stop. Not just the major ones, or the busier ones, but every single one. And on top of each of those, a receptacle for cigarette butts.

meh.. not looking for points LOL

anyways its not the ads that i dont like. Ads arent a big deal. To me its part of a city scape. The problem is that those cans arent functional. I dont use them because the flaps are hard to open and usually are disgusting to touch.
