Do you ever......

When you are putting a track list together, is there ever a time that you use a less desirable track that you would not normally think of first, but it goes well with your transition/que points of the tracks before/after it? Not a terrible track, but not in your top ten at the moment?

uh, yeah...this is essential to do when applicable. progression, good musical match between songs, and overall build is more important to a mix than just being a collection of your favorite tunes. at least, in my experience and opinion.

Uh, I thought so too. I have never just tried to cram a track in there because I like it or it is popular (I leave that to Dave). I so delicately am putting this out there and hope that some of you suckholes will be gentle with it, especially the trance haters.

Of course. I mix harmonically so I tend to make sure all tracks link together somehow in a mix. I would rather play a less-desirable track (still solid mind you) to lead into that money track than rush into it. Even though some tracks are not as choonish as others, I also like to get them SOME kinda playtime as well.

01. You should like all the tracks you play. Something is seriously wrong if you're playing tracks you don't like.
02. I prefer to be a DJ that helps make tracks popular rather than just play popular tracks.

I definitely like all the tracks I play. I think I am just getting to that point where I try to be too perfect and am never really satisfied all the way through. Kind of like sex with Dave's mom.

I agree with Dave. A good DJ will always play the music he/she loves, you do have a problem if you're not because its likely to show in your mixing. I know people that got into dj because of Techno (as an example), and ended up playing Hip Hop in a lame ass bar to make a living. This should not be the case.

I think when you're making a set (Trance, minimal, idm, whatever) it should always be done progressively. In other words, tracks should progress and go togheter "harmonically".

seriously, i think ppl put way too much thought into shit like this, mixing should just come naturally, IMO anyway, if you have to put alot of thought into what track ur playing next then you're not doin it right

Nothing wrong with knowing where you stand when your set starts. You're still guessing when you go to the next track...only difference is your guesses are educated.
