I can't wait for those great Stage 3 alerts when the rolling black-outs start If my power gets shut off at home I am going straight to work!

Posted by ivanbee on Jul-25-2006 00:20:

if it's hot, my ac is on. i'll worry about the blackout's later.
i also got a battery powered fan just in case

Posted by R!CH on Jul-25-2006 00:27:

seriously, turn your a/c to 80 degrees or higher and employ box fans to circulate the air. i stay very comfortable doing so and my daily highs over the last week are 108-114 degrees (it's 106 right now) so you should be fine also! you waste A LOOOT of energy overusing a/c... and not only is it pollusive, but it's also expensive... my power bill last month was $650 keeping the a/c running at 78 all day. pg&e doubles and triples your rates after a certain useage

by raising your a/c unit 3 degrees, you reduce your personal green house emissions by 50 tonnes per year!

Where can I find some! I need to get me a couple of battery powered fans. Saturday sucked when our power shut down around 1:30 til almost 4:00pm!

yeah that also killed myspace's data center for the entire weekend because their ups failed to fire up, then their cooling units failed when the power returned

I feel so bad that you guys have to go through all that. Hope y'all get past it REAL soon.

I am freezing!!! I closed up all the AC vents in my house except the one in my room and cranked the AC down to 60. L.U.X.U.R.Y. I forgot that it was even hot!

We are in stage 2 up here

Posted by TSG on Jul-25-2006 02:55:

Just heard on the news that we're now also on the "STAGE 2" alert!!!

I left work around 6:30pm and couldn't believe that it was HOTTER than what is was around 2:00pm! That's freakin crazy!

Posted by DaveT on Jul-25-2006 03:05:

Let's make it clear. 90-95 degree weather in the South East (ala Florida) is WAY FUCKING WORSE than the heat we've been experiencing here. When down in SoCal it was pretty humid, about 60% humidity....but Florida at 93 degrees and 95% humidity is way harsher, IMO.

Still sucks to go outside, though...well, unless you are inside San Francisco where it's VERY nice!!

Posted by |Thrax| on Jul-25-2006 03:19:

obviously we just need to buy a bigger power grid.

yes, burning more and more fossil fuels every year is the solution. enjoy hotter and longer summers along with shorter and more torrential winters. when are people going to wake up? when our highs average over 120 degrees? obviously what we really need to do is control our frivilous use of energy... setting the a/c below 76 is wasteful, doing so makes your a/c unit run indefinitely, as in 24/7

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU DAVE!!! I got off of my flight in Jacksonville when it was 94 degrees with 96% humidity and it felt like it was 120 degrees. It seriously felt physically ill because the weather kicked my ass.

Nope, I work in a freezer 8 hours a day so I get hot at anything above 65 degrees. My ac runs 24/7 in the summer with a huge electric bill to show for it, but as my dad says "I would rather be cool and poor than rich and hot!"

Posted by |Thrax| on Jul-25-2006 03:41:

sarcasm is funny.

obviously if we are running out of power, we need to upgrade. just need to throw some more hampsters on the wheel.

you know it's not entirely impossible to be rich and cool?

i bought it at fry's about 2 years ago. i've never actually had to use the battery's though, it's always plugged in. i got it as a 'just in case'.

and ya myspace blew up last nite i guess. my buddy works on the same street and his building was shut down today so they can repair some stuff that blew up underground. the news this morning reported that the manhole covers were flipping like coins

How cool are we talking???

Posted by Electrophile on Jul-25-2006 03:58:

And don't give me that "it's cool to save energy" or anything like that!

Thanks! Got a few "just in case" things already but never thought about a fan.

No Thrax, you are wrong! Why would we need to upgrade? I know the population is growing and I know that business is expanding and there are hundreds of new homes being built everyday and we can expect this trend to continue for years and years BUT we should just keep cutting back on our electrical usage until we can barely complete our day to day tasks, then we can think about upgrading.

/sarcasm

I think we should gather up all the prisoners and make them turn a giant wheel to generate electricity that way they are actually giving something back to the world that they are un-fit to live in.

Posted by |Thrax| on Jul-25-2006 04:15:

you would fit right in with teh tree hugging hippies in san francisco.

j/p

ya, electricity camps, or something.

yes, i know we are total energy hogs.
