Threads. It is a British documentary about society after a nuclear war. Most depressing thing I've ever seen in my entire life, but an outstanding eye-opener.

Wow, nice thread buddy! I also love documentaries and they really do make for such good edutainment. There is so much brain rotting crap out there, I find it a real treat to watch something intelligent and thought provoking for a change. Feed your mind!

And ya, The Corporation is a personal favourite of mine.

+1 I read the book and watched the video in a class of mine. Both were excellent!

Great thread though Pett. I'm totally into the "true story" thing. One of the few reasons I want cable/satellite to get the History channel or Discovery channel or something. I'm stuck with normal TV.

Since I don't have these channels...where do you get most of your documentaries? I don't think you can really rent many at Blockbuster or watch full ones on the internet...can you?

Also, I caught a bit of a documentary on a tornado that hit Windsor, ON back in 1946 on the weekend. It was pretty interesting - but freaked me out on my drive home the next day in the dark when I thought I saw a funnel cloud!

is that really a documentary? I thought documentaries were supposed to be based on fact? none the less it sounds cool.

if you like nature documentaries, anything by david attenbourough

like

Life of Mammals
Life of Birds
The Blue Planet
Life in the Undergrowth
The state of the planet

these are all excellent

another excellent BBC doumentary is called "The century of the self" and its about how freuds cousin used the ideas of the ego and ID to conform and shape society today through marketing to your inner desires. very cool.

and the best place to get these, is your public library. although i know, for example, that there is a year's wait on life of birds at the downtown college/spadina library :S

"The Five Obstructions" - Based on Jorgen Leth's "The Perfect Human". Lars Von Trier has him remake the short film 5 times but with 5 restrictive obstructions.

Moments of play" - Jorgen Leth - How people play in different cultures

"The Take" - about the economic collapse in Argentina. Produced and directed by Avi Lewis and Naomi Klein

Michael Palin - Himalaya series

"Road Stories for the Flesh Eating Future" - Lewis Cohen - all about technology, cloning; it's like William Gibson in real life. Amazing!

"The corporation" - not a favourite but important nonetheless

You can join the NFB film club and watch docs online for free!

There's ifilm too.

Excellent thread.

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.....amazing documentary shot right at the time that the Chavez government in Venezuela was overthrown for 48 hours. It really opens your opens to what Chavez really tries to do for his country, how much the people really love him, and the propaganda spewed against him by the rich elite in the country as well as the US.

Bowling For Columbine....Moore's finest and most powerful documentary in my opinion.

Global Dimming....BBC documentary on a phenomenom occuring around the world with regards to the earth being able to absorb the sun's light after all the enivronmental damage that has occurred. Pretty scary stuff.

Gaza Strip....documentary about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from a Palestinian boy's viewpoint.

One absolutely amazing doc...Control Room! Based on the war in Iraq, but you get the Arabic perspective. Covered by Al Jazeerah

BBC Planet Earth Parts 1-5. It will blow your mind. Craziest world/nature documentry I have ever seen. Some of the shots they get are fucking retarted. Im not sure how to track it down around here other than good ol' torrent spy.

Highly Highly Highly recommended

There's a documentary I want to find. Last year at WEMF some guy interviewed sketchbag mcgee Lars and myself for a documentary. He didn't give us any information so we have no idea what happened with it! If anyone sees Lars and I in a documentary please post the info here! haha

Born into Brothels
Website briefly talks about the documentary
http://kids-with-cameras.org/home/

it's really good one!

Don't know if this one has been mentioned yet....

BBC Massive Nature

This spectacular documentary is 5 or 6 parts long, and shows some of the biggest nature interactions between species. It will blow your mind seeing 10 million sardines travel along the east coast of africa, and get hunted by sea lions, hundreds of dolphins and sharks which all meet at one point in the journey. BBC made it look like each species is seemingly marching to war and they all collide in one big battle for survival at the end.

Hands down one of the best I've ever seen is called...

The Times of Harvey Milk

It won an academy award and is about gay rights, and the life of a gay politician in San Francisco.

100% worth seeing.

+1

Kutos to the forensic accountant research on that one!

I'm normally not an anti-corporate, down-with-The-Man, Che-loving-tree-hugger but that movie was awesome.

The Smartest Guys in the Room - The story of the rise and fall of Enron, and the people responsible for the biggest corporate scandal of this century. Captivating, from first minute to the end...

Rize - A journey into the hoods of Cali where Crunk and Clowin have given the urban youth an alternative to gangslife. If you believe in the power of dance, then you HAVE to watch this documentary. Blazin hip hop tracks, and off the hook dancing provide a backdrop to how people who've been dealt a short hand find a creative outlet to express themselves. An Inspiring story!

Long way Round - 2 men, 2 bikes, 20,000 miles... A series that follows actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman on a motorcycle trip around the world. Ultimately frivilous in content, but made entartaining by the personalities and stories the two genuine blokes bring with them. Best celebrity 'reality' series you'll ever watch. When's the last time you saw a celebrity go to Mongolia ? Or spend a night in a 'real' Russian gangsters house ? Watch it before you go on safari, it'll probably be the best 6 hours you'll ever waste.

Dark Days - Near Penn Station, next to the Amtrak tracks, squatters have been living for years. Marc Singer goes underground to live with them, and films this "family." A dozen or so men and one woman talk about their lives: horrors of childhood, jail time, losing children, being coke-heads. They scavenge, they've built themselves sturdy one-room shacks; they have pets, cook, chat, argue, give each other haircuts. A bucket is their toilet. Leaky overhead pipes are a source of water for showers. They live in virtual darkness. During the filming, Amtrak gives a 30-day eviction notice...A rare gem of a film that touches upon a subject most people would actively choose to ignore. Gut-wrenching in its honest potrayl of the forgotten people.

Hoop Dreams - This documentary follows two inner-city Chicago residents, Arthur Agee and William Gates, as they follow their dreams of becoming basketball superstars. Beginning at the start of their high school years, and ending almost 5 years later, as they start college, we watch the boys mature into men, still retaining their "Hoop Dreams". Along the way, there is much tragedy, some joy, a great wealth of information about inner city life, and the suspense of not knowing what will occur next. One of the most powerful documentaries i've ever seen which touches upon the most basic facets of our existence; hopes, dreams and everything in between. Do yourself a favor and watch it.
