Beat / Bass volume during gigs

I was wondering why the bass / beat volume is always so damn loud, which makes it almost impossible to listen to the melody and vocals.
Saw PvD last saturday and songs like satellite were almost impossible to listen to the vocals.....
It s not the first time...with AvB, Ferry Corsten etc...it was kind of the same....
Next time I am going with ear-plugs....

PvD played Satellite?

srsly. it's one thing to play GOOD songs that are 3 years old. but satellite? wtf.

Yup, he plays the 'Alx Oddens Flipside Vocal Mix' every now and then.

I think its ok, this remix is great, so why not...

Buy some earplugs. Seriously they will protect your ears and the music will sound a whole lot clearer, 2 birds, one stone.

Search for "Elacin ER20"

I've noticed the same thing. It seems like most clubs don't care about the actual sound quality as long as it's loud as fuck.

This kind of thing is why I'm not going in some events anymore. It can totally ruins your night.

Thankfully the biggest club and event-organizer here has a great sound system with crystal clear quality, so can't complain much. But I know exactly what you mean, some people think "as loud as possible = better", it ruined some house parties and half-assed events I've been to.

I Love some nice deep loud bass in DnB events.

With Trance I do prefer the mid range to be up but not too high , and if the highs are too high it can js sound like a mish mash of high hats, esp after 9 hours, not like we've got a choice though

I want to have my cake and eat it too.. I want to feel the bass shake my body but I don't want it to drown out the music... I may look into some decent earplugs..

Posted by Sungod on Jul-26-2006 18:16:

Yeah..he played satellite..and of course For an Angel and Time of our lives... A coupel of others form his previews albums, but the bass was to strong to i.d. the rest

Dont get me wrong, I love some strong bass, but together with the melody and vocals

Ill use some earplugs next time for sure.

Don't ear plugs mostly block out high frequencies though?

yea if u get the cheap foam type plugs, they make the sound muffled and really bad. Theres only one way to get the proper ones and thats going to an audiologist, or equivalent professional. They will custom make a set of plugs that fit YOUR ear shape, and they lower the volume w/o loss of certain frequencies so its all there, just a bit lower volume so no hearing damage/loss.

The Ear plugs wont help. Honestly. But they WILL protect your hearing, so buy them for that purpose alone. A fucked up sound is a fucked up sound at the end of the day.

yeah exactly, ear plugs wont improve the sound quality, but at least you don t get out of the club with your ears hurting and listening to that piiiiiiiii sound for hours...

damn that sucks.. i don't think i've ever had that issue with any UK clubs. there's been a few times where the mids & treble have been way too high though, which doesn't distort the sound but is murder on your eardrums and leaves you with tinitus the following morning

every club i have ever been to in the uk blares out at way too loud volumes, go to germany and it's 20db quieter,

clubs like gatecrasher and godskitchen are the devils arse when it comes to loudness,

decent earplugs just reduce the volume, not the frequencies you can hear,

i have a pair of triflanges that have served me well over the years, i just put them in and forget about them,

I've noticed most DJs don't care about the gains in the mixer when spinning..

That's true! but the issue of the bass and kick loudness is related with the PA (Public Address) sound system. In this case i suggest move around and find a place where it sounds better.

In my case it would have been standing outside, next to the street
