ear shape & sound spectrum
ive noticed that when i put my hands behind my ears, sort of cup around them, i get much more clarity out of any track at lower volumes. around the vocal range. does that mean that my ears aren't large enough? or would this be common to everyone?
its probably something to do with the acoustics of cupping ur hands round ur ears

quite possibly, but it doesnt mean dumbo has got ultrasonic hearing keh?
what a weird thread!
You hear certain frequencies better becaue your hands act as a filter. Ever wonder how you fucking talk? Your voice box is an oscillator and your mouth is a filter.
Time to learn :-D

What might be happening is that the cupping action is cutting out certain frequencies, which makes you perceive the vocal range as louder or clearer than normal. Interesting question... |

Another explanation is that maybe your cupped hands are resonating and thus boosting the frequencies around that range. Ether way, your hands are still acting as filters. |
Then enjoy not resting.
I dunno but ages ago I was reading about doing it and if the frequencies appear to change then there's something up with your room acoustics.. Or something like that. When I do it, the highs are elevated.
Different materials will have different effects on specific frequency ranges. This is why when sound studios are built, careful attention is given to the size of the room, the symetry of surfaces the sound bounces on, and the sound absorbtion of certain materials. Without putting hands behind your ears, you'd have a considerably different sound if the wall behind you wasn't made of concrete and instead was made of something like... human hands! (ok that's kinda creepy)
