Well, it was automatic, so I didn't usually think about it. I was on the highway, & it felt a little weird, but I had music blasting, so I couldn't hear anything. But after a while, it felt like I had the damn parking break on or something, so I turned down the music & just heard this VRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. I was like "Oh, FUCK!!!" and instantly knew what was going on...but yeah, it wasn't my greatest of moments. haha

Heh, near death experiences. If this makes ya feel any better...
So no shit there I was, falling 120mph toward the earth for the 7th time. JMs released me to fly solo, all goes well for 20 seconds when I started spinning left and to the right. Tried to counter the spins with arm turns but no luck. Checked the altimeter saw I was at 7K and decided to throw the pilot chute rather than risk the situation getting any worse. I throwed not a second sooner than I started spinning sharply to the left. Body was jerked upright by the deploying chute and looked up to see the lines twisting from the spin. "FUCK!!" I reached up, pulled the risers apart with all the adrenaline I had left and kicked hard and repeatedly to the right to undo the twists. I was bleeding altitude fast and had to make a quick decision to wait 3 more seconds before cutting away and pulling the reserve. The line twists can undone and the canopy squared itself away. After determining it to be stable, steerable and landable I proceeded to the the dz for landing pattern. Rest of the canopy ride was uneventful and standup landing into the wind.
I had a few thousand feet to spare, so I didnt have that close of a call
but that was my first canopy malfunction so far. Luckily haven't had to use the reserve yet. Only thing that sucks is having to repeat AFF level 3 next sat.

dang; the only time i've ever been close to death was when i was working in japan. i was crossing the street, and i put a step onto the actual road from the sidewalk. at that very same moment a bus runs a red light and goes no further than a couple inches from my nose.
although if i got hit i probably wouldn't have died unless it hit me really strangely, but it wouldn't have been too enjoyable!
those japanese bus drivers HAVE to be on schedule.
glad you guys are ok though. near death experiences=uncool.

I had the same thing happen with an armored truck in Chicago. Actually, in that case, it was my fault, though. It was one of those times where, during a green light, a couple people just start to cross in a break in traffic, and once a few people are brave enough to do it, everybody just starts following, 'cuz no car is gonna barrel through 50 people, green light or not. So, that started happening, & the crosswalk was filled, so I just started going, but then I got halfway across & all the people got to the respective sides, & I was the only person left, so a fucking armored truck just comes barrelling along right at me. That was somewhat amusing.

Well, Im glad Seekrets is okay because statistically driving is more dangerous than what I am doing. (there are more situations that can occur on the road with little time to react) Skydiving has risks but most of the incidents come from newly licensed divers trying stuff they aren't ready to do yet, or experienced divers beinging complacent (again..similar to driving) Rarely is one killed by malfunctioning gear, as opposed to pilot error.
I know what everyone's thinking... "Whuffo you jump out of perfectly good airplanes?"

Thats the only thing I DO NOT miss about Houston. I laugh everytime I hear an Austin commuter bitch about traffic. "TRAFFIC?? Shit man try SW freeway during rush hour or the fucking 610/59 interchange. You would kill your self!!" ha ha
peace
