Futebol Clube do Porto - season 2006/2007

You might remember a thread started last season by a lunatic who talked to himself about his football club. This is the follow-up.

Futebol Clube do Porto - season 2006/2007

Badge:

Kits:

My personal opinion is that the main kit is wank, the secundary is cool.

Competitions for this season:
UEFA Champions League (directly qualified for group stage)
Portuguese League (holders)
Portuguese Cup (holders)
Portuguese SuperCup (against Vit. Setbal this month)

Pre-season:

Rhoda Raalte 0-6 FC Porto
Stevo 0-9 FC Porto
Groningen 2-2 FC Porto
Rigtersbeek 0-13 FC Porto
Heracles 0-1 FC Porto
FC Porto 1-0 Roma

4 August, Amsterdam: FC Porto - Man Utd
5 August, Amsterdam: FC Porto - Inter Milan
12 August, Manchester: Man City - FC Porto

Lots of goals against completely crap teams, and no defeats. Nothing remarkable, yet quite good. The upcoming matches should be quite some test.

Squad:

1 - Helton
Goalkeeper, 28 years old, brazilian. Excellent goalie who grabbed the #1 place from Vitor Baa midway last season. Very good with his feet as well, altho his tendency to dribble forwards has resulted in some scary moments lately which he afterwards dealed well with - things might go wrong one day.

2 - Ricardo Costa
Centreback/right-back, 25 years old, portuguese. Versatile player who had more than enough opportunities to show his worth, but hasn't proved to be anything more than average. Yet, was 1 of our only 2 players who went to the World Cup. Rumoured to leave.

3 - Pepe
Centreback, 23 years old, brazilian. After a disastrous debut season, Pepe surprisingly did well in 05/06, being voted the best centreback of the league. Has some occasional fuckups, but is a fairly good player who isn't afraid of moving forward with the ball.

4 - Pedro Emanuel
Centreback/left-back, 31 years old, portuguese. Arguably our most solid defender, Pedro has been regularly used by Adriaanse on the left in his strange 3-3-4 formation - he's better on the centre but does a decent job. Makes a lot of fouls, but on a smart, non-violent way.

5 - Marek Cech
Left-back/centre midfielder, 23 years old, slovakian. I like this guy. Solid, consistent, some technical qualities, joins the attack with some moderate success. But don't ask him more than that - he's not a superstar.

6 - Ibson
Centre midfielder, 22 years old, brazilian. Very skilled with the ball on his feet, Ibson is liked among the fans, and only isn't used very regularly due to having Lucho Gonzalez playing on his position.

7 - Ricardo Quaresma
Winger, 22 years old, portuguese. Massive technical talent, one of the 2 key players in last season's success. However his inconsistency and some brainfade moments (like violent behaviour) have limited his international success. Famous for his crosses and shots with the outside of his foot.

8 - Lucho Gonzalez
Centre midfielder, 25 years old, argentinian. The other key player - he is the engine of our midfield, distributing the ball exceptionally well, also scoring frequently. Missed the chance of a great world cup due to an injury in the 6-0 game against Serbia & Montenegro.

9 - Lisandro Lopez
Striker/left winger, 23 years old, argentinian. Quality finisher who puts a ton of effort in his game, and is definitely a fan favourite. However some bad luck with injuries and some occasional bad games relegated him to a backup position, where he'll probably remain.

10 - Anderson
Attacking midfielder/left winger, 18 years old, brazilian. The next brazilian superstar? Everything points that way. Last season he started winning a place in the team, this pre-season he seems to be settled there already. Technical, flairy, dribbling wonder.

11 - Tarik Sektioui (new signing, ex-AZ Alkmaar)
Winger, 29 years old, moroccan. Comes in product of Adriaanse's "knowledge of the dutch transfer market" (aka lack of knowledge of all other markets). Seems to know how to dribble, and doesn't look completely bad, but hasn't really convinced me yet.

12 - Bosingwa
Right-back/defensive midfielder, 23 years old, portuguese. Capable of the best and the worst. Might make an horrible sequence of poor passes, then dribble past 6 players and score a goal. I don't really like him, but we don't have anyone better for the right.

14 - Bruno Alves
Centreback, 24 years old, portuguese. Possibly the worst player of the squad. Is clueless with the ball on his feet, makes regular defensive errors, makes a load of fouls and is violent for no reason. It scares me to know he's still part of this team.

15 - Ezequias (new signing, ex-Martimo)
Centreback/left-back, 25 years old, brazilian. Another senseless signing. Seems average at best, nothing really indicates he's a player with the necessary skills to play in a big club like Porto. I'll give him some time but my opinion isn't favourable.

16 - Ral Meireles
Defensive midfielder, 23 years old, portuguese. Without being spectacular, Meireles is a fairly good player, regular with his passes and pretty good at shooting (he is our free kicks taker, altho we do really need a better one). Should get a lot of playing time.

17 - Vieirinha (promoted from FC Porto B)
Winger, 20 years old, portuguese. The CM/FM series superstar finally arrived to top class football this pre-season, impressing Adriaanse with his technical abilities. He clearly has talent, but the step up to Porto might be too much and he could still be loaned. Appears to dive a lot.

18 - Paulo Assuno
Defensive midfielder, 26 years old, brazilian. The guy who gives the much needed balance to this ultra-offensive team. Exceptionally regular in making the compensations at midfield, will very certainly be the first choice for the position.

19 - Tomislav Sokota
Striker, 29 years old, croatian. Decent striker which has had several serious injuries for the past couple of seasons. The questions about his physical form make him not the most safe of bets as for a regular place on the team.

20 - Jorginho
Attacking midfielder/winger, 29 years old, brazilian. Although he leaded the assists table for a while last season, most fans don't seem to like him at all, and that has affected his confidence. We're talking here about another player of technical qualities with some versatility.

21 - Alan
Winger, 26 years old, brazilian. Yep, yet another winger. He isn't really, really good but does put effort in his game and wins the chance to cross at the endline. But isn't a top class player.

24 - Paulo Ribeiro
Goalkeeper, 22 years old, portuguese. 3rd choice young keeper, considered promising in a limited way. There isn't much to say about him as he doesn't get to play. He's just there.

26 - Joo Paulo (new signing, ex-U. Leiria)
Centreback/defensive midfielder, 25 years old, portuguese. Probably another backup. I haven't seen much of him, but in today's friendly he done a lot of needless, somewhat violent fouls. People say he shoots with a lot of power.

28 - Adriano
Striker, 27 years old, brazilian. With his low profile and fugly grin, became an important player out of nowhere in the 2nd half of last seasons league. Scores goals usually in a not too pretty way, but the fact is he does score them. Should play a lot.

29 - Bruno Moraes
Striker, 22 years old, brazilian. A very serious injury forced him to lose last season entirely. However very surprisingly he is the sensation of this pre-season, with creativity, technical skills and clinical finishing - we might all get to hear more about him in the short future.

31 - Diogo Valente (new signing, ex-Boavista)
Left winger, 21 years old, portuguese. It's still a bit soon to know if he's got what it takes to settle at Porto, even if I know him already for some time. Is another player who puts a lot of effort, and shoots well, but it might not be enough.

99 - Vitor Baa
Goalkeeper, 36 years old, portuguese. Last but not least, here we have the football player with most titles in his career, in the entire world! Nothing is forever though, he has lost his place to Helton, and it should be the last season of his career.

Manager:

Co Adriaanse
59 years old, dutch. A personality, even if only for his extremely unusual style of play, a romantic all-out-attack 3-3-4 formation with a single centreback that strangely works. Is quite strict and will remove a player from the starting eleven for weeks after a single bad game, he might even remove him from the squad alltogether. Doesn't seem to be too bright in hiring new players. The fact is, he did manage to win the league and the cup last season (funnily the first 2 things he ever won in his career), making the club nearly forget Mourinho was there in his place, so he does have a lot of merit.

Tarik was part of the 1996 moroccan junior team that won the african nations cup, he was one of the most promising moroccan football players alas he didn't shine once he reached the senior national team, he also played in a lot of mickey mouse teams in holland ... a lot of people were surprised when they heard he made it to porto, this is definitely the best club in his carreer. i hope he delivers

That's odd, i thought it was something minor and he'd only miss the next 1 or 2 friendlies, but haven't really seen anything on the media about it. He has just returned from holidays recently, and hasn't played yet this pre-season.

We're playing Man Utd today in Amsterdam, should be a nice match. Also Ajax-Inter, which will be the following game.

Inter Porto the next day

I heard the Lucho news from a Benfica fan so lol who knows

Posted by noikeee on Aug-04-2006 17:54:

We're losing 2-0 at halftime. We entered the game very well, but Scholes scored a long shot, then Rooney lobbed Helton for the second goal and from then on Man Utd has been more dominant. Our defence have made several silly mistakes, they try too hard to pass it clean to the midfield instead of putting it out for safety.

Rooney has been sent off for hitting Pepe in the face. Was quite exaggerated as it didn't seem like an aggression or even intentional, but reinforces the idea the guy has a bit of an attitude problem.

Posted by noikeee on Aug-05-2006 17:45:

This tournament is embarassing for us to say the least. We create chances like Barcelona, and waste them like a 3rd division team - our defence is even worse.

This tactic doesn't work at all against big teams, period. It's good when we need to kick the asses of Naval, Gil Vicente, Aves, Beira-Mar - but not against Inter and Man Utd!

Posted by noikeee on Aug-05-2006 18:52:

Strange heading lob by Adriano, superb bycicle kick by Cech and we minimize the losses by "only" losing 3-2. Oh well.

Posted by zoric on Aug-05-2006 18:55:

I've recorded the last 20 minutes from a stream, where Porto two goals, one beautiful, the other one hilarious

..where Cesar gets red carded, and Goran comes in and makes his debut in Amsterdam Tournament. To bad I didn't record this earlier..

I LOVE FOOTBALL.

Adriaanse quits today, apparently just because the club didn't buy the forward he wanted, wtf.

Good riddance, I want a top class manager now.

wow i hate that shit its so disruptive to the club so close to the opening of the season that is

any possible replacements?

Posted by noikeee on Aug-12-2006 13:23:

Jesualdo Ferreira is named by the press as the most likely replacement, he's the guy who really pushed Braga to the top the last 2 seasons, problem is he has been signed by Boavista for this season and the checkered flag idiots don't want to release him, neither reach a deal. He's not too bad of a manager, what makes me worry the most is that he had his chance at Benfica a couple years ago and did nothing.

Other possibilities:

- Jos Pekerman (the best choice IMO, has 3 U-20 world titles which is an excellent CV for leading the very young squad we have)

- Jos Antonio Camacho (good one too, great work at Benfica and shown balls in his short period at Real Madrid)

- Manuel Machado (up-and-coming guy, quite a defensive bastard but knows his tactics, great work here at Madeira with Nacional)

- Agostinho Oliveira (idiot who stirred a bunch of trouble with Scolari while leading the U-21s, can't say i like him)

Meanwhile, Hlder Postiga has returned to the squad since Adriaanse was the only one who didn't like him, and we seem to have signed yet another striker: the colombian Renteria, from about-to-be-south-american-champions Internacional.

edit: now i've just read Eriksson, Cuper and Ranieri are all possibilities for the new manager. Errrrrrrrrrrrm

Posted by fastmp3 on Aug-12-2006 19:28:

Camacho would be perfect for the job if no one bothers him
