DJ Competition
Im playing in a DJ competition this sat. and I wanted to get some advice any1 has to offer. I play prog. trance and funky house , but the comp. is in nebraska and trance isnt too popular , and the judging is partly based on crowd reaction! I planned on playing some latin / jazzy house in the beginning and slowly move up to bangin funky house ! or should i just go off the crowd reaction? hmmm never played at this venue before so I do really no what to expect from the people.
In every dj competition I've been in based on crowd reaction, the winner always plays the cheesiest stuff.
Its not just based on crowd reaction , but i bet thats one of the largest judging area's.
you might be better off playing some stuff like DJ Z-Trip or DJ A.M. plays. its kinda hard to get great reactions from jazzy house in any DJ competition.
Remixes man...popular stuff remixed by good producers.
You'd only be selling out a little bit.
play tech-tribal house.
Just go fuckin nutz on the decks playing whatever you want!! The crowd should hopefully feed off you energy, and if they don't, forget about them and spin for yourself...
Ohhh last weekend totally changed how I want to be as a DJ..
Good Memories..
Pull some Q-Bert skillz

find out the style of music the judge likes and just play that. then change once you have won the comp and have a residency there...

how long of a set are they giving you?
you deff must pull a couple of dj tricks if its based on crowd reaction...also it might help to check out videos on youtube and yahoo video...if you see a video that grabs your attention then most likely others will enjoy it too and therefore you can use those techniques that you see in the video...
ps..the jesus pose will also help

for the dj comps i've been in
get as many people as you can through the door that will support you
play cheesy (for calgary anyway), or to the crowd as some say
basically, get people on the floor and moving
(tease em with a couple current remixes)
then lay it down so solid it will never move

Tony M is bang on the money again.
Forget all these bits of advice and abide by this one only.

Get as many friends to come and support you as possible, make sure they are in a party mood and entertain them. Make sure your friends make the place go off. It's as much about them as it is you. This is what all the other guys will be doing with half a brain would do, why do less?
Fuck winning the thing, promoters don't care if the judges like you or not but when they see a large following they think in terms of these people filling their clubs and bars.
Judges are sometimes weak and will generally be influenced by the crowd anyway.

PS
Don't do the Jesus pose!
It is actually probably advisable that you go funky as that is the easiest way to get people stomping. Anything else often needs time and a bit of thought and a bit of time to develop which is something that you may not have in a comp. Pick stuff that you think would rock a party and just makes you feel good inside.
Just be natural, smile, show emotion and look as if you are enjoying it. Interact with ladies, let people know that you have the confidence to be there.
Cheers
