Sleepthief - The Dawnseeker
Great album from Sleepthief, a new music project on Neurodisc Records. Sleepthief is Justin Elswick and Israel Curtis (though the concept was Justin's, Israel Curtis helped alot with the production and engineering of it, so I give him credit for being a part of the project). The music can be described as reminiscent of Delerium and Balligomingo, so you can picture lots of female vocals. Some of the vocalists include Kirsty Hawkshaw (of course), Kirsty Thirsk, Jody Quine Harland, Robert Carter Harrison, Caroline Lavelle, and Nicola Hitchcock.
The music is pop-like, as the lyrics can be quite catchy and the sound is quite accessible. The vibe is neither super happy, nor depressing and dark. It is kind of decieving, because you would think this is some really gothic, dark stuff when in fact it's quite cheerful. Some points in the album it goes off course though, and sounds too much like pop music, where Delerium and Balligomingo can level it out better with some darker, more ethereal and sensuous type tracks. But I will still say that this is a great CD, worth checking out. You can visit the My Space page Sleepthief and listen to some of the tracks. The best is Eurydice IMO.
Anyone interested in this album? It's quite nice. I first heard about it when Sleepthief friended me on MySpace. At first I thought it was just another bedroom producer or amature, but it's actually a high-production value album with lush female vocals. It's not just a rip off of Delerium or Balligomingo, as the tracks have a unique flair to them thanks to the diverse set of vocalists and moods. The guy even said that he likes Delerium and Balligomingo but he has much stronger influences from other artists.
