۰ Yes, here it is, the newest full album from Chemical ۰ Brothers (no mere It Began In Africa single). Back to their ۰ old styles, with some really keen new styles (first track ۰ almost reminds me of Brainbug's style, but with more kick ۰ and some kooky vocals). And if you're not sure if you want ۰ to spend the moments to grab this before it hits stores ۰ (Januart 28th or 29th), at least grab "Hoops" my fave track ۰ (close second is My Elastic Eye, starting off sounding a bit ۰ like Vespertine era Bjork). Other artists this album may ۰ have been inspired by are Basement Jaxx, Rooty era with a ۰ nice bouncy dance feel to parts of this album. For someone ۰ else's words, here's a pretty good review (but Daft Punk as ۰ Baroque Pop? And there are no vocals on 'Pioneer Skies' its ۰ 'The Test' which features Ashcroft). ۰ ۰ "Tom and Ed return with their fourth album, 'Come With Us', ۰ a joyous romp that strikes back to the heart of the Chemical ۰ sound clash. ۰ ۰ Arriving on the arpeggio string arrangement of the title ۰ track, you could be forgiven for thinking for an instant ۰ that the Chemicals have followed Daft Punk into Baroque pop ۰ territory. ۰ ۰ The thought is foolish and short lived. ۰ ۰ After their brief classical intermission, the Brothers dust ۰ down their trademark surging beast of beats and spiralling ۰ synth sounds, disinter a dark vocal sample, intoning "Behold ۰ We're Coming Back", and deliver a scorching guitar and bass ۰ synth laced 'Social' break beat. ۰ ۰ As an indication of what is to come it's powerful and ۰ poignant, boldly re-stating the no-holds barred approach ۰ that originally made the Chemical Brothers stand out. ۰ ۰ Lest it be forgotten, not only did the Chemicals break the ۰ mould in the mid Nineties by being a dance outfit that ۰ embraced indie acts, they also espoused an anything goes ۰ philosophy that utilised rock guitar, thundering hip hop ۰ drums, scorching acidic 303, African beats and, as they do ۰ here, classical string arrangements. ۰ ۰ Rising through repeated aural assaults, break beat break ۰ downs and a quirky Leo Nocentelli funky guitar line, 'Come ۰ With Us' charges like a genetically modified funk rock rhino ۰ into the tribal trance of last year's single, 'It Began In ۰ Africa'. ۰ ۰ 'Africa' is competent but next to the engaging, ۰ work-in-progress quirky funk of 'Galaxy Bounce', it seems ۰ straight. All of which makes the appeal of the soon to be ۰ released 'Star Guitar' single more odd. ۰ ۰ Combining a slightly tweaked house drum pattern with gushing ۰ swells of trance synth lines and an ambient, occasionally ۰ Balearic, feel, the formulae here is far from original. But ۰ it's won applause wherever it's been played. Once again the ۰ secret of its success is in the production, where the ۰ endemic fragility of the song is given depth by the ۰ contrastingly harsh drum sounds. ۰ ۰ But perhaps the greatest achievement of 'Come With Us' is ۰ its stamina, with one of the most interesting contributions, ۰ the multi textural 'Hoops', only coming half way through the ۰ playing order. It may not be the obvious single, but it's ۰ probably the album's finest moment. ۰ ۰ 'My Elastic Eye' again collides the delicate and ephemeral ۰ with harsh electronica, and with more devastating effect ۰ than the comparatively safe 'Star Guitar'. ۰ ۰ The theme of organic fragility jutted against electronic ۰ energy is repeated in Beth Ortan's plaintive vocals on 'The ۰ State We're In', in which she struggles against keyboards ۰ and effects that in anybody else's studio would have been ۰ too high in the mix. Here it seems to work. ۰ ۰ Juxtaposed to this comes 'Denmark', a bass driven disco ۰ stomp that clatters along on early Nineties Knuckle's wood ۰ blocks before the full drum kit takes over the percussion ۰ and a bass drill pounds into the 'Pig Bag' bass line. ۰ ۰ Further pushing the boundaries, 'Pioneer Skies', an ۰ awesomely large production for its length, sounds like pure ۰ Pete Townshend circa his 'Who's Next' prog era. ۰ ۰ Finally the plodding drum rolls of 'Pioneer Skies', ۰ (should be 'The Test', looks like a minor error on the editor's side) ۰ featuring Richard Ashcroft, offer the album's largest olive ۰ branch to the unrepentant unconverted. ۰ ۰ Unlike their recent offerings, 'Come With Us' doesn't rely ۰ on collaborations to cross over into different markets. Nor ۰ does it turn out tub-thumping dance music to capture the ۰ club contingent. ۰ ۰ Rather, like their earlier offerings, it matches big sound ۰ crowd-pleasing gimmicks with the cerebrally challenging and ۰ adventurous. It exposes the unmatched raw nerve of Chemical ۰ Brothers' production and spikes it with innovation. ۰ ۰ A subtly brutal and powerfully fragile masterpiece." -- Ben Osborne ۰ ۰ And if you're not sure if this is the real thing, there's ۰ the CD (mail me a scanner if you want a scan). Dismiss this ۰ as "merely a promo" if you want, but the CD is only stamped ۰ with the "promo only" mark, as seen on anything sent to radio ۰ stations. No covers, that's how I got it. Track names from ۰ numerous websites (they match up, with vocals and 'Africa'). ۰ Enjoy from Team CHR - taking time to do it right ۰ ۰ URLs >> ۰ >> www.dotmusic.com/reviews/Albums/Jan...eviews23442.asp ۰ review source, with links to sales and pretty pics. ۰ >> http://the-raft.com/chemicalbros.html >> nice site w/info ۰ >> www.astralwerks.com/chemical >> astralwerk's c.b. portal

Definitely going to check them out in DC! Going to be off the hook with Tongy too...
It's an excellent album....
Except "Pioneer Skies" which is the most horrible track I've heard in ages (that high-pitched grating synth just doesn't quite cut it... and it doesn't go anywhere)
BUT:
Even that cannot destroy the album... fantastic!
I wish they'd come 'round here for a gig someday...
They'll be here in April! WOOP!! (w/ Oakenfold...is that a good thing?)
I like it more everytime I hear it...

Is Chemical Brother breaking up? According to
http://www.jockeyslut.com/bestof/index.html
They might.
DECEMBER/JANUARY 99/00
Ed: "I used to really enjoy MegadogI've always thought that when you're near hippies you're never far away from good music."
Ed: "The irony of the Social was people were saying, 'Oh it's all about small clubs' and we'd just come back from Cream. But the Social was a lot of people's big moment. The music we came out with connected with them. A hip-hop feel with the excitement of techno. It hit a nerve with them. Our DJing wasn't rocket science, it was an amalgamation of all the experiences we'd had in Manchester."
Tom: "Trance is the ever-present music. Go anywhere in the world and it's the music you'll hear. It's melodic techno isn't it? Trance as in a small 't', is what acid house is; repetition. I don't know why we've been suddenly linked to Trance music though. We went to Gatecrasher for one night and had a good laugh."
On the next album:
Ed: "It's going to be a quickie. It's wide open. I'm 28 now. It might be the last full-on, banging album we do."
