why is my comp SLOWER after installing 512 MB ram?

sorry yall i posted same thread in the dj thread, but i know a lot of you non-djs may be smarter w/ computers.. basically its faster, but i have this freezing going on which didnt happen before, just 1 or two seconds of the system/mouse, which KILLS my recordings (line-in)

before it only happened a lil' near the end of my mixes, i assumed cuz RAM was low, but after installing 512mb more.. its pretty fast, but what can i do about this freezing???

its not like my hard drives are full or anything... arghh!!

please somebody help me

Posted by AnotherWay83 on Mar-07-2002 06:56:

simply increasing ram mite not be the answer..i also increased my ram from 64mb to 192, and the difference isn't all that great because the processor is still only 300mhz

how fast if urs anyway...if its not that fast then i'd suggest overclocking it...but u'd really need to know what the fuck u were doing

Posted by ABTsportsline on Mar-07-2002 07:01:

hey pat,

your problem isn't with size of RAM, but rather with compatibility problems... i had to go through 3 different memory manufacturers till i found one that was "compatible" (i.e. didn't freeze) with my OEM RAM....

BTW i liked your old avatar better... LoL i always picture Stewie when i see your name!!

whoa.. considering that im computer-retarded, i have NO clue what you guys just said. hehe.
well its a pentium2, but robby from what you say sounds like that's a bitch.
but it was better before, so there must be a solution right? maybe too many progs in my tray or something?
heh.

anyways i changed my avatar cuz so many damn ppl w/ that one now, id see it and think it was my post.. hehe... i like yours for sure, when'd you do that?
get on icq i need to talk to you anyways
i lost my list so msg me

thanx guys

First of all, although its obvious, but make sure your bus speeds are compatible. Even though the PC133s will drop to 100 if thats your bus speed, i'd personally still change it. I imagine you have 2 256 RAM chips in there, which usually come in PC133Mhz.

One major mis-judgement people get is, the more RAM, the better.... but it can actually backfire. More RAM is great to an extent, more isn't always better. 512 is ok, but if I were you, i'd drop down to 384......I run programs left and right, listening to music while I am on here is almost standard, and I run everything else while doin it, whether it be games, photo editing, etc........

Perhaps you have a Dell? If ya do, take your chips back, and go get some RK-Bytes......Dell comps can be picky when it comes to types of RAM.......

Don't worry, that "pausing lag" isnt permanent (its annoying as hell, I've seen it before), you just gotta find the right chips.

Also, I'd recommend getting a "free up RAM" program (some people don't like them, but they are useful).........they are free all over the net......once your RAM gets low (which it does, I don't care how much RAM you have, if its below 1 gig, your comp will get laggy eventually) it'll free up that used RAM up and give it back to ya......cuz just closing a program doesn't mean you free'd it all up. You'll find yourself not having to reboot for atleast a week.......

Anyway, hope some of the advice helped.......

try downloading cacheman from this site http://www.outertech.com/ , it worked for me!

Some system specs would help....
There are known issues with RAM and OS...

if u are using Windows 98/ME/95, it has bad memory management and cant function as well as XP/2000/NT. NT or above can handle upto 2GIGS of Ram if u have it. have u try changing the swapfile for your computer or loading less junk during start up? this will occupied less of your memory and less swapping in your HD.

also be sure to download my mix "digital recreation" - people say it helps

im somewhat curious about this too. i was recommended RAM and it installed fine. im just wondering cause a) I have DELL and b) with an 800mhz p3 and only 256mB total now - will i actually see a difference? late/

Posted by patticus on Mar-07-2002 20:24:

thanks all.. i dunno if i can take the RAM back out though, it wasn't me who put them in.. heh..
im running Windows 2000 on an HP Paviliion (?) Pentium 2.. 733 MHz... uh. yah

if my system resources are up to 55% now should that be enough?

Posted by Fir3start3r on Mar-07-2002 21:49:

I wouldn't worry about system resources too much.
Your computer will work fine even with 5% system resources.
You 'could' have some faulty RAM though...RAM can do wierd things...
I only way to verify that however would be to take the RAM and see if you still get the pausing and freezing.
If your system is under warranty then I highly suggest taking it back to were you got the RAM, tell them the problem and ask them to take the RAM out or swap the RAM module.

The other thing you can look at is the location of your paging (aka swap) file. If it's on the same physical drive as your OS and you have another physical drive, I'd suggest moving it over there.

That's my best suggestion.

Hmm you mean Pentium 3? Pentium 2 is not 733 Mhz...
just wanna clear that up..

Posted by patticus on Mar-09-2002 01:48:

uh no its a 2 im sure its not a 3... or a different brand "celeron" but i have no clue what that means

Posted by AnotherWay83 on Mar-09-2002 01:56:

the celeron and the pentium are 2 different processors

Posted by yujie__ on Mar-09-2002 02:25:

Celeron and Pentium2/3 are same processor with different amount of cache (128K vs 256K), bus speed (100Mhz vs 133 Mhz), and multimedia instructions (MMX and SSE vs MMX+SSE+SSE2) . the celeron is a cripple version of pentium. it is design for budget market not the regular market.

Posted by patticus on Mar-09-2002 02:36:

damn so i have a budged ass comp?
u think i can depend on it to make a decent recording, somehow?

ya im getting that skipping again that i got before i installed the RAM, when i get further along in the recording...

Posted by yujie__ on Mar-09-2002 02:56:

no i am saying your component inside might be cheap and bad quality. are u sure u dont have too much junk in there? i have a celeron450 and 384 ram and it runs as fine as my friends p4 1.6.

i dont think pentium 2's went up to 733..only up to 450
