Review: Industry Party at Saunaic

Got there right at 11 and waited in line for about 20 minutes for them to finish getting set up. I was the first person in from the ticketholder line and as I walked up the stairs I knew it was going to be a hot night at Saunaic.

Everyone I went with left around 3:30 because they couldn't take the heat anymore and MarkT left around 5.

Music was great other than Mario J, crowd was also great like at all of the Industry Parties. What was with the no filling up your water bottles in the washroom tonight, espically with that heat. That was stupid and dangerous.

I really liked Farina for my first time hearing him live. Perfect music for the kind of mood I was in.

Met Special K and a few others but I'm a little too sketch to remember.

RJ, Margaret, Tara, Frank, Tristian, always fun hanging out with you guys.

Graham my friend, always a pleasure partying with you...good times.

Until the AC gets fixed Sonic will forever be SAUNAIC to me.

Tonight was the first time the heat at a club has actually ever bothered me. By the end of the night I could ring out my shirt from all of the sweat. The AC was on, just not doing a good job.

ditto and ditto.

it was as hot as it was when the a/c wasn't working *at all* for Honey Dijon, lol. Everyone was complaining...but their complaint would then be qualified with them saying how much they were enjoying the music.

Farina was a lot of fun though...loved his jazzier stuff early on and then it was pretty bangin' for a while.

Graham, RJ, Margaret, Frank...good to see you all again. I'm afraid that I'm holding every subsequent party to the Beach Club standard and I realize that's just not fair

Jay, Dan, Chris, Colin, John & Sarah...always a pleasure...next up, Lee Coombs @ Footwork in a couple of weeks! (well, at least Colin will give the breaks a shot)

Saunaic indeed!

back to the after party that was supposed to end 3 hours ago...I'm glad no one in my office is on TA (anymore...) to know why I'm going to show up at noon or so tomorrow (if at all)

lol. hardcore!

Music - excellent, there were some nice harder bits that farina played

People - decent crowd, not too much attitude

Club - omgwtfbbqsauna!! I left at 3 because I could not take it anymore.

I also fell on those stairs for the first time ever.

Really? I think he should have a permanent/weekly residency there, both times I've seen him his mixing and tracks have been wicked.

Awesome night...music was stellar...crowd was mature, experienced and good looking...the women were beautiful and lots of amazing dancers. The heat...I guess when you have sweat dripping off the brim of your hat it's a good indication that it's close to unbearable/dangerous.

Jeff...buy an alarm clock fuck!

Maybe just not my style of music. Both Graham and I sat down and talked for his entire set.

if the AC is on and the party is still sweaty that just means its a damn good party

so then why are people complaining?

Posted by infinity HiGH on Aug-07-2006 20:49:

Farina played exactly what I wanted him to play, and then some. Non-stop groovey, sexy basslines; with some hip hop influence here and there to add to the funk of it all.

...back to passing out...

there's "hot" and then there's last night

the heat is actually quite fun when there's a bit more room to dance, move, etc...but it was a bit annoying with the crowd pushing all over the place.

Honey Dijon earlier this year was easily just as hot (no a/c at all), but there was 1/3 of the people and I had a blast.

Lots of cool, friendly people there last night, but more than a few assholes too...it wasn't *quite* the vibe I was expecting...it was a good night, just not 'great'...Matt C and Farina were very good though...actually, it was the best set I've heard from Matt C in quite some time.

some dude passed out in a bathroom stall downstairs, with his pants taken right off, apparently for 2 hours...after throwing water on him and still being unable to wake him up, security was trying to figure out how to get him outta there without breaking down the stall door. Hope he was ok, but jeez

AMATEURS! LOL!

youve obviously never experienced proper warehouse parties!

People actually used to talk about how rediculously hot it was (in a good way)

because people were stupid and didn't know or didn't care about the dangers of overheating/overdancing/dehydration at parties.

fixed Sonic is a club, not a "proper warehouse party".

on a positive note...I do love the venue and am looking forward to Miss Kitten in Sept

Although I was really looking forward to this event, I have mixed reviews.

The Good:

- Decor
- Matt C's opening set (besides a few really out of place tunes)
- Mark Farina - Wow! I think I liked almost every single song in that set. He was on fire. Funky and jazzy all the way through, with elements of hip hop and downtempo. I absolutely loved the downtempo stuff he was playing. He didn't play it last time when he was at Sneak's Birthday.
- KENNY GLASGOW - OMG! Get this man on the resident roster at Sonic PLEASE. That was such a fucking dark and dirty set. He has a very unique sound compared to all the other Toronto residents. I was amazed.

The mediocre:

- The crowd. There were a few really good dancers, and there were some people that were friendly, but there were also a lot of people that were rough around the edges. I also witnessed a bit of messyness.

The bad:

- The heat - This was definately one of the hottest I've ever attended. I was literally drenched with sweat for a good few hours.

- NO FILLING UP WATER BOTTLES - This was just completely unacceptable. To me, it doesn't get any more shady than this when it comes to running an afterhours club. It was so fucking hot in there, and people were loosing sweat at a rate of 2 bottles of water per hour. Not only is this illegal, but it's also amoral. This is clearly a cash grab technique. With tickets at $40, and selling booze (which raised my eyebrow a bit in the first place), they shouldn't have gouged their customers again with this shadyness. I don't care if it's an "Industry thing" or not. This should not be allowed to happen.

- Mario J - I'm sorry, but how do you play a set like that after Farina?

All in all, despite some sketchy people and some very shady business practices, I had a good time because of the company I was with. I will definately see Farina again.

Walked in, straight to the patio (was already sweating by the time I got to the patio) saw many familiar faces. Everyone looked like they were having a great time. The tunes Farina was laying down were sick. Would have loved to stuck it out, but like Ray mentioned it was way to hot and to crowded for me to enjoy the night.

Went on an adventure to get to the club, stayed at the club for 30 minutes, continued on the adventure back home. It was a great three hours.
