Drawing in volume automation

So I'm in a bit of a problem right now...I'm trying to have this pad run for 3 bars as a solid note and then 1 bar with a sidechained effect. I've been trying to draw the volume automation for it because I don't want it to sound like it later on in the track, but I've had no luck. Anyone have any ideas of a different approach or maybe what i could have it sound like. I know it should duck once the kick hits, but even with 1/4 beat grid snap I can't draw it in correctly. Help would be greatly appreciated.

use sc compressor anf bypass it once not needed
