You are aware that automatic transmissions also have gears right? I think the word you are looking for is manual.

I drive both, but prefer manual transmission.

Why are you asking "Americans and such"?

there's this wonderful option at the car dealership, u wouldn't believe it!!!

u can either chose to have a manual transmition (change the gears yourself) OR u can have automatic! it's great.

so yea, depending on which car u buy...

as for me, i drive an automatic, but i know how to drive a manual. my dad made sure i knew how to drive a manual when i was 15. i'm glad he did because i've been in several situations where it was necessary.

the only difference between an automatic transmisison and a manual is that a manual uses a clutch to transfer power from the engine to the gearbox, that and it uses a throw linkeage to shift gears. auto transmissions use a torque converter to transfer power from the engine and use solenoid valves to control gear shifts.

Well... I'd say there's quite a few more differences than that.... but these are the basic ones.

Planetary gears, for instance.

from a pure function standpoint those are the main two.... if i wanted to nit pick there is a pissload more parts to an automatic transmission than a manual.

+1...Steptronic ftw. I abuse it at times, though...

EDIT: So yeah...automatic most of the time, but I switch it over when I feel like it aka when violating far more laws than usual.

I drive an auto.

I also drive like a prick. I'm in NJ, so it's required.
