Direct Plug-in Monitors

Dont know if thats the technical term, but i'm looking to get a pair of these to plug in right to the new mixer i purchase. Anyone else have experience with this type of monitor, and what are your thoughts/recommendations?

I noticed these need a different type of plug in option on your mixer, which might be a problem for me. I wanted to get the Dj-M400, but then noticed the back doesnt look like it would support this type of monitor. Hmmmmmmm.

You're looking for active monitors I believe. These kind of monitors have an amplifier built in, meaning all you have to do is hook them up to your power then hook them up to your mixer, usually via a balanced TRS 1/4 inch or XLR connection. If you bought the DJM 400, you would be making an unbalanced RCA to TRS/XLR connection.

Some good monitors to look into-

KRK's Rokit Series
Alesis Active Monitors
Mackie HR series

Hope that helps

Sorry for sounding like an idiot, but is unbalanced a good thing, or a bad thing? lol.

Thanks for your info and help

balanced is better (than unbalanced) for noise reduction

Hrrrrrm. Should i now reconsider purchasing the M-400 because of this? I would like a good quality mixer, with the option of having a direct plug in for monitors!

Posted by ill0gical0ne on Aug-14-2006 19:28:

correct me if I'm wrong; but it shouldn't matter what mixer you buy... because the outputting signal isn't powered

where the hell would you plug the monitors into this?

fuck... lol - nevermind - im guessing the two aux plugs. im a sketchbag.

i'm thinking about picking up a pair of these..... any feedback?

those yorkvilles are fine as long as you get the active models.

Any DJ monitors for at home don't really need to be massive in terms of power and drive, unless you intend on using them for house parties, etc.

Any mixer can output to any monitors. As for the lines between the mixer and monitors... as long as it's under 15 feet/ 6-7 meters between them, then you don't need balanced connections/cables.

If you have only RCA ouputs from the master on the mixer, then just use them and get a converter if needed to plugin to the speaker.
If you have XLR or TRS outputs from the master, then you can go right into most speakers.

P.S These monitors can take a pounding but watch the redline andor clipping.

I'm loving it. It's part of my first setup w/ 2 800 mk2s and it's perfect. PM me if you want more details.

i dont think ive seen a dj mixer with balanced outputs. doesnt make much sense since RCAs are unbalanced, so your inputs are all unbalanced (unless of course you are running digital coax or optical).

to answer your question you would go from the master output on your mixer to whatever amp or monitor you buy. simple adapters are all that is needed.

.. never seen balanced? don't know what for??

... live club applications?.... pro-grade amplifiers require balanced inputs for best transfer of signal.

mixers that have balanced outs...

Denon, Allen&Heath, Ecler, Pioneer, Urei, Rane, etc.

Balanced outs on a DJ mixer are usually convenience for hooking up to balanced input amps, EQs, compressors, etc. The other reason would be for any microphones hooked up to the mixer (which use balanced lines too).

To hook up monitors, you will need either XLR to 2-RCA adapters, or 1/4" to 2-RCA adapters.

The only advantage of a balanced connection is the ability to run longer cable. This isn't an issue for monitors, as you keep them close to you.

I really am shocked that the DJM-400 doesn't have balanced outs, though. It's pretty standard.

Foolish Mortal!!!

u see those two MAster OUtputs, 1 and 2?

WEll the one with the stereo/mono switch is for your monitors. Sometimes DJs like to put the monitors on mono.

If you've got the X1500, hen you can use the balanced outputs if you want.... then you'd need XLR to whatever the monitors will take. You don't get sound degradation./interference on audio lines unless you have a shitload of power cables near them or the run of the line is longer than about 6 meters.

Just XLR, man. XLR-XLR to be specific.

hehe add to that my top of the line numark dxm-06

Well, I think i am retarded. For the DJM-400 and if you have two active monitors. You would need 2 RCA->TRS/XLR cables. Then hook one monitor to output 1 and the other to output 2, correct? And set the outputs for mono or stereo?

I was looking into hooking the mixer to a pair of Alesis 720DSP monitors. After looking at the yorkville setup posted earlier, it would appear you only need one connection to the active monitor, and then with the Alesis you simply hook the 2nd monitor to the one with the input from the mixer?
