Everytime I try to make a Trance track I just go offcourse and end up somewhere else!

I have a lot of great ideas of how a kick ass trance track would sound like, so I sit down at my set and try to make the track that I am singing in my head, and I get something that is no where near what I wanted and I don't know if most of my productions even qualify as Trance.

Here is my latest track so you can get an idea of what I am talking about : [[ LINK REMOVED ]]

I would appreciate it if someone can point out the major production mistakes in this track.

Thanks in advance

DJ BERKAT

ok, here is what im getting..

lack of effects.. repeteive and undynamic lead, the sub on the kick is all too much.. u cant use another kick as a clap/snare. all sounds needs equalizing.. there is no percussions going on. im not hearing any percussions except 2 kicks..

Practice and experience make your creations closer to what you envision.

i was thinking u started off making trance and ended up with prog or something.

I have the same problem. I end up with a cool (in my opinion) opening and then goes off in the woods somewhere. I'm sure with practice and patience, it will get better - at least I'm hoping

i dont no how long you have been producing but it doesnt happen over night. some of my first tracks were embarassing and their still not at a level im happy with.

the way i learnt was by posting my tracks to see what people say about them and tell me the direction where to go. as a n00b your not going to get reviews by sitting on your backside and waiting. if you want reviews get reviewing other tracks. i was reviewing many tracks and learning from them also.

be prepared for the worst also. you will get alot of negativity towards your tracks, this you must take onboard and look into these areas. after a while you will see the difference. keep practicing and learning and trying ideas form other tracks also helps.

good luck!

You do have a point there, I am currenlty working on a new track and I have taken your points into consideration so we'll see what happens next

first of all i see your a new guy around these forums so im just going to assume that youve just started producing...people take years to hone their production skills and its lots of time and energy and LEARNING to make trance (let alone good trance). so just keep trying man..also you should know that some of the best tracks come about from veering off an idea...and idea is just a start, a masterpeice is a "happy accident" in most cases. so dont be frustrated that your ending up somewhere you didnt want to....

I see.

To answer some of your speculations, I guess I started producing when I first got my hands on the Korg Electribe EMX-1 4 months ago.
I have a pretty busy scheduele so I have been playing around with prduction for like 1 hour a day since I got my Electribe.

I just wish I have had joined TranceAddict a long time ago, I have leaned a lot about the mistakes that I am doing in production in such a short period of time, and I could have worked on my mistakes a long time ago only if I knew.

Trance is the only thing that cheers me up when I am down and it's one of the few activities that I enjoy during my free time, it KILLS ME INSIDE not to be able to make some good tracks especially when I know how I want the tracks to sound.

Time and patience I guess

Thanks for your opinion.

even though this guy is new at this , i do understand what he's saying.. I always set out to make a trance track and I end up with a sort of soundtrack type track usually. But I don't mind it because I'm not trying to make trance tracks like they are now.. I'm trying to make my own style/genre but I really rarely stick with my original idea, it always changes and evolves as I go.

My only thought on this subject matter is to keep reading, learning, and really focusing on your production and different sounds. Pick apart some trance tracks and see what really makes the tracks great, not just good. That'll help you realize what you are lacking in your productions.

Indeed that's what I have been doing for a while, even though I am not that skillful but every type of sound or rhythm I know how to successfully produce I can associate with a certain track of some famous producer that I kept listening to for a while in order to understand what makes his track tick.

i agree with kane's statement about reviewing others' will help in improving. i used to think that reviewing is just merely giving out words about a track but if we spend a lil bit of time to just understand the tune and give our professional side of critics, we can actually learn something from it (e.g. spotting the flaws, what areas can be improved, ideas, etc). i definitely learnt something from reviewing tracks, just like you learn thru listening pro tracks.

for me, i'd try to follow the mainstream trance before i go to my own style. i think it's better to get a grip of what the public prefers and incorporating it with your own ideas.

Actually, the melody and development are pretty good. What you need is some dynamic qualities thrown into your leads, and some effects to give the song direction, as well as percussions to give the song drive.

Good luck.

I say you should run with it, make the sounds that serrendipity leads you into, explore whatever wild path you may stumble into during your projects without regard to whether it fits as trance.

This stuff kinda flows out of your soul (KINDA!), if you have trance in your sould it will come out, if you have something else in there it will come out in your tune, and there is no shame in it. Sometimes I like to think that I can tell when a person is supressing their soul in a production, if you are a trancer you should make trance, if you are a progger you should make prog, if you try and make somethine that doesnt fit in with who you are it tends to come out sounding really fake, so take whatever your soul is leading you towards, and run with it, you'll have more fun that way too.

Well thank God this is one of things I am really sure about, I am a Trancer and I am really passionate about that fact, remember that in scenarios like the track I have posted in this thread I am heading out with the intention of making that track a trance track but it just slipped out of my hand and I found myself making a track that doesn't fit my taste too much, but still there are somethings that I like about it like the selection of the synth and the beat(well maybe the bass was too much but that's no biggy) but the structure was the problem for me.

I think the main thing I can be glad about is that I am just not one of those producers that think there tracks kick ass no matter what, I just KNOW IT when my track sucks ASS without anyone pointing that out, and same thing goes for when the track kicks ass too

I think fortunately for me I have a track that I have been hammering at for a week or so that I think has the potential of pulling me out of my "not so cool tracks ditch" that I am stuck in

I will be posting a sample of the new track very soon so you guys can see if I have corrected the mistakes you guys have pointed out before or not.

Well good for you I hope all goes well for you once you finish that track. I have one question for you though...you said

what do you think drives your track away from where you wanted it to go? Is it your sound selection? Is structure really the only problem? Sometimes just one sound that you think sounds good by itself can put your track into a totally different direction. One psy, dark, or techy sound might just put your track into a different genre solely because that sound that you feel sounds great by itself gives the track a whole new vibe than what you intended.
