Kompakt Extra
Can this sublabel do any wrong? Almost everything I've heard from it is fresh, banging, and top-notch. Techno for your dancing shoes. Minimal with muscle. Neotrance with bite. Whatever you want to call it, the stuff rocks. Also, can a technohead explain what sort of style is it supposed to carry versus the sound of its Kompakt parent?
Also, do you have any favorites from the label?
One final question: why the hell does anyone group this with electro? It strikes me as a far-too-common misnomer.
I fail to see what this label has to do with electro as well, but one can most likely just lump that phenomenon in with how carelessly the term "electro" is being thrown around about any music with a buzzing bassline. On with the trainspotter blurbing..
I haven't been all that impressed with the recent outings (esp the last Oxia/Boratto split was woefully uninspired), but KOMEX 01 till 10 are all essential, particularly seeing as 01 includes the fantastic yet hideously underrated "Fackeln Im Sturm" by Grungerman (Wolfgang Voigt). Personally I have a soft spot for Speicher 16 and Mike Ink's track, "Playing With Knives". Bouncy 303 goodness that sounds just as good no matter where the pitch is.
It seems that KomEx is more strict dancefloor material, while Kompakt is far more varied (ambient releases from Markus Guentner and Joachim Spieth, glitchy deep stuff from Thomas Fehlmann or more atmospheric house from Kaito).
Monaco Schranze - Der Sger von St. Georg (11)
Steve Bug - That Kid (Ha.te Mix) (21)
Mathew Jonson & The Mole - Dirt Road And A Boat From Soundwave (26)
This stuff is so good.
just call it good music.
Indeed, it has got jack shit to do with electro, but then again, so does 90% of the stuff that gets the "electro" label slapped on nowadays.
While there sure is some quality amongst their releases (that latest Superpitcher / Stardiver release is pretty decent), I can't really say KomEx is a real favourite of mine..
Michael Mayer & Reinhard Voigt - Transparenza
this is what its all about!
Jonas Bering on kompakt is where its at.
The music policy on kompakt extra is a bit more dancefloor orientated than kompakt, at least thats the way it appears to me. Also as you've probably noticed each ep has a track from two artists.
The only kompakt extra release worth talking about are voigt's -supertiel and michael mayer - x. There are a few other decent releases but nothing with any timeless value like these two.
