[Trance] Original Thought - David Adams [256 K]

Hey everyone. I've been working on this off and on for a little while now.

If you get a chance, please take a listen and let me know what you think of it. I think it might be a little 'bright' on the mastering side of things. I get different results with different speakers/headphones; unfortunately, I don't have good monitors yet.

It's almost exclusively using Rapture save a few Absynth effects here and there. The drums were done using Battery 2.

I hope you enjoy....

Edit: This is an updated version. I raised the kick and bass to what I think is too much, but since everyone always tells me to raise the kick in my songs, I thought I would go a bit overboard (to my normal liking). Is it too much? Just about right?

that intro pad sounds awful familiar, is this a remix?

anyhow nice intro although you need more fx in here to give it a dreamy feel. kick needs beefed up. try a good compressor on it.

nice synth sounds but i cant really hear your bass. try and have your bass floating around the mid area. percussion all seems fine just need more of it. have lots of percussion to give your track thickness.

again more fx throughout the mix.

has a nice sound to it and it could be good if you make your sound fatter.

good luck!

Nope, its not a remix. I had posted that opening arp to several forums because it sounded a little familiar to me as well. No one could place it. I think its just one of the many standard chord progressions.

I'll try to beef up that bass, add more to the kick, add more fx, and add more percussion (I can already tell my next purchase will be Stylus RMX) .

Thanks for the listen! I appreciate your comments!

Nice pads in the intro. A lot of highs right now. The percussions are very minimal right now. I think the highs are really too high right now. The bassline sounds very cheestastic, but that's fine. The gated synths are nice, but they're sounding quite old school. Not bad for a starting track.

I was sent a PM that indicated my song has the same progression as the trance song: Cynic Project - Matrix ][. I took a listen and the background pad is identical.

This sucks!!!

Has this ever happened to any of you?

D'oh...you told em? Well..seeing as I went to the trouble, I may as well share:

Adam's song vs. Cynic Project - Matrix ][

This happens a lot!...especially with simple chord progressions. This is a stunning arrangement though, and the pads are simply INCREDIBLE. This intro of yours is one of the most immense pads I've ever heard, so don't worry about your "REMIX". LOL

edit: dang, this song is incredible! Some harshness still in the 5-10kHz range and some more bass might be in order...but this tune is so well built and so bloody addictive I've had it on loop for over an hour!! ahhahaha

Funny how you called it "ORIGINAL THOUGHT" too! LOL..its like an extra kick in the groins!

I'm glad you like it.

I told the forums I posted the song in what you discovered so I could remain intellectually honest with myself and everyone who listens to it. I can honestly say when I first started this song (the main arp is what I started with), I thought it sounded familiar so I posted it in a couple forums (including TranceAddict) to see if had been done before. I was told it was a standard chord progression so I was in the clear. As a result, I went forward with it.

Right, wrong, indifferent... Dunno. I had fun doing it. I need to fix it up a bit as was mentioned by those of you whom listened and then move on to my next project.

ROFLMAO!!! I didn't think about that until you mentioned it. Perhaps, I will rename it to "AFTERTHOUGHT"

Well, I'm in my 30s. Maybe I've had too much late 80s and early 90s techno influence. One of the synth instruments in my tune reminded me of an "Ace of Base" song Yes, I own one of their CDs

Take care everyone!

I tried cranking up the bass and kick drums in my production. But, now, everything else seems a bit lower. I know its a give and take thing, but can anyone offer me any suggestions on increasing the kick without making the other pieces suffer?

ahhhh i got it....that chord progression!
i believe its from that old school dance track:

rythim of my love..oh oh
the ryyyyyyythim of love

the pads are really airy, really nice.
the track itself sounds a bit dated, i think some more fx and some automation with the filtering and stuff would help out a lot.
maybe a tad of reverb on the master would help with the sound to.

nearing the end it gets a tad tedius, maybe a change in the melody or something would help.

Thanks man! It sounds a bit dated because I am dated I'm in my 30s. You have to take that in consideration Heck, if I could make something sound like old Depeche Mode, Information Society, or Erasure, I would be absolutely tickled

You are the second person to mention effects. I 'thought' I had quite a bit in there. I'm not sure where to put them, but I sure can play with it and try.

Thanks for the listen and the comments...

Take care,
Adam

Cool melodies and nice chord progression
I think the whole tracks lacks punchiness and power, mostly because of the percs.
This kind of song does not need that much effects in my opinion, youre not trying to do psytrance right? Ambiance is what is more sought after here, and you achieved it pretty well

The chord progression is really nice, as has been said (and it all sounds really old school too as has also been stated).
The arrangement is really good, there's always layers coming in and out which keeps it pretty interesting despite the melodies being fairly simple. The gated one that comes over the top of the arps is quite nice actually.
The mix definitely can use some beefing up, and imo the kick is the main culprit, its a rather dull thud. Either layer some more kicks over the top to enhance the sub and the top end, or do some eqing of the existing kick. Rolling off the bass end of the rest of the synths while the kick is playing may help.
Nice one!

Is sounding old school bad? I have a hard time letting go of my past

Thanks for the comments, pho and gr8ape.

I'm bumping this for my edit. I added more to the kick and bass as some here and in other forums suggested I do. As a matter of fact, I get that suggestion for many of my songs

Is it too much? Just right?

Here is the link to the tune...

Thanks!
