DJ's who only use laptops for live sets

I'm just curious as to what dj's out there only use laptop's for their live sets, like Sasha and BT, for example.

A TA and Producer/DJ Blake Jarrell I believe only uses a laptop...Ableton Live.

wait...

G&D use Live, but tack on a cdj for if need be purposes. Ritchie Hawtin also uses Live... and lets see... Matthew Dear (I think,) and Stanton Warriors. I'm not sure on the last two, but I know they at least use it to produce.

Hawton only uses Live for his sets? I thought he does cd's too....

I'm talking about djs who use nothing but their laptops. Of course, cds are needed in emergencies...

pvd uses laptops primarily, just like G&D was described

PvD "uses laptops" He really is just using a harddrive to hold his crap while he uses the same ancient turntable technology to spin.

matthew dear only uses ableton live, when doing Audion live. As matthew Dear he uses final scratch. richie usually uses live to run serrato feed through it to be able to use some EFX. Also, he used live for a brief time as a research tool for his "transitions" project

From what I've seen hes playing less and less shit through Serato and more and more shit through Ableton.

definately not true

he has done live bootleg mixes

quite a few actually

and whenever he uses scratch live, he always plays his "signature sound" using his sampler devices.

nathan fake

me too!

wait, who cares...

The thing is, you see alot of these big name dj's jumping on this bandwagon but I think its only because they can simply afford it. I'd love to incoorporate a laptop into my sets among many other things but I know, with my current financial situation, I simply can't do that right now and I know most are in the same boat as me.

I guess what I am trying to say is that it is nice to see dj's utilizing all of these new technologies but it really gives people a fale interpretation as to what a dj is today. I think we are still a ways away before, let's say, cds begin to completely dominate the dj scene as a whole or using laptops.

Nice, you got a tracklist for that? Couple of songs I cant get. Cheers

Posted by Zoso on Aug-16-2006 16:50:

So, when a DJ uses two laptops, what kind of beat matching is involved? Is this handled entirely by the software of his/her choice? If so, this seems to take away at least one element/skill that a DJ should possess, right? Of course it would allow one to focus much more on programming, phrasing, track seletion, etc. All of which are clearly necessary skills. Just got me thinking, that's all.

this makes me not want to be a dj anymore. ive lost all hope in humanity now. this is gay.

Posted by Blake_Jarrell on Aug-16-2006 17:08:

I do an Ableton DJ set about 80% of the time but always bring CDs as a backup. it also depends on the gig, sometimes its just not worth it to set all that stuff up, especially between two djs, it can be a real pain in the ass for all those involved.

G&D used laptop when they came to Cyprus...didnt even need their headphones
