Need some advice on the nordlead 3 rack

I have just gotten an Access Ti, the Hottest synth (IMO).. that aside. I have enough money to get the second synth on my list, the nordlead 3 rack. From what I hear it would be a great synth for the rolling Sqaurish arp basslines, and Plucked leads. I mean Can you guys help me out, SHOULD I GET IT?! I mean i have the TI, and yes I dont want cramp a bunch of top end synths in my studio at once. Please Give me the Pro's And Con's. A good friend of mine said " you have the ti, thats really all you need."

Get it.

Ti + NL3 = Best combination possible imo

alanzo should give you some of his opinions on nord lead 3... he have one i suppose alanzoOOoOoOoooooo.....~~~

The Nordlead 3 is an amazing synth. I use nordlead and virus c most of em all. Go to a store and check it out. Might be nice to check a fx box for it too as it doesnt have any internal effects.

If you've just gotten a Virus TI, you should NOT buy another synth, especially not something as complex and expensive as a nord lead.
Give yourself some time to learn and master the virus. (6 months atleast) Then consider buying, if you even need one at all.

Eldritch's right. I just picked up a Virus TI although I had the C for about a year and I would wait till you master the TI before deciding to buy anything else. The TI is a powerful synth and should meet your needs on most things for a while.

Think of it like Billy-No-Mates downloading all the latest warez crap and stuffing his PC with every possible VSTi's not really understanding how none of them works inside out. Ok, not quite as bad as that, but you get my understanding?

If you want to spend some cash, you could use the money to buy some high spec monitors if you dont have any decient monitors in your studio?

Posted by Drik on Aug-16-2006 14:13:

I agree with this. Good monitors really help getting a great sound when mixing and should be your first priority. But I mean, if you really want to spend money, the Nordlead ain't a boring piece of equipment

Posted by michaelconway on Aug-16-2006 17:17:

the monitors i have event TR5's I just dont want to not be able to buy one later. Like I know right now i have the funds, but what if I dont tomaro you know what i mean.. Besides that i like alot of the FM sounds the nordlead can do I mean yea the TI is a powerhouse, but both shouldnt sound like "similar" should they?

Posted by michaelconway on Aug-16-2006 19:53:

thats it Im getting it! whoot !

Posted by Drik on Aug-16-2006 20:18:

Seriously mate, you wont be dissapointed

Posted by simonbostock on Aug-16-2006 21:16:

Bugger! The more I look at this thread, the more I wanna get a nord3 with the TI. ;-)

Posted by michaelconway on Aug-17-2006 01:59:

lol thing is I have been using vsts for the past three weeks now and man even using my virus classic sounded better. The sound quality on the lower frequencies sounded cleaner, je-no-wha-e-mean. I keep getting this naisy clicking sound with vsts thats the best way I can describe the sound. So what do you think? I still havnt orderd it although im going to..

Posted by Drik on Aug-17-2006 05:54:

Best part of Nordlead is of course the "made in sweden" tag

Agreed. Learn what you've got first.

Posted by michaelconway on Aug-18-2006 19:37:

I am familiar with the virus TI, I had the virus classic before and I learned that one well. The ti is much way easier than the classic to get things done on. BTW I JUST ORDERD THE NORDLEAD 3 RACK! I know the virus thanks to memeber Derivative on this board guys a genius. Anywho I was going to get the nordlead 3 sooner or latter anyway.

SO YEA I JUST ORDERD IT AND ITS ON BACK ORDER FOR 22 Days :-C

Well if it makes you feel any better I dont have money to "toss" around. My pops helped me out and signed for a card from Musiciansfriend.com 's card. :-)

Best advice all thread. Sadly ignored

I would also change that 6 months to a couple of years. You can get the basics in 6 months.

If you must buy another synth though - why another VA?! Theres something of an obsession with virtual analogue to the exclusion of almost every other type of synthesizer on these forums and I will never understand why...

Hell if I had 1100 I would buy an analogue monosynth (maybe Future Retro Revolution). Put the rest in a savings account until I have mastered that baby then buy an Alesis Fusion workstation a year down the line when they have ironed out all the OS problems.

Conway. Face it. You have G.A.S. (Gear Aquisition Syndrome)

Revolution is crap. speaking from experience. Besides, it only cost $650 USD, not $1100. Future Retro 777 - now that's a thingie to get.

Peace!

I have a Ti and NL3. You can make virus sound similar. But something in NL just makes it... different. And this is coming from a guy who tried NL number of times. I had NL1, NL2, NL2x, and NL3 (twice!).

Each time I dismissed NL without much concern. Once, I decided to sit down and figure out if I should sell it or keep it... and I am not selling mine anytime soon.

The sheer immediacy with which you can create sounds blew me away. Listen to the demo I created - this is nothing but NL3. I tried to make TI sound like that but couldn't. Most of the patches (like Solar Flare) or "Ice dropplets" would be damn hard (if not impossible) to recreate on virus. It's brighter and sometimes warmer than virus, that's just my opinion. To each his own. Word of advise, if you want older NL, go for NL1 Keyboard with PCMCIA expansion (to get 12voice poly) and Pro5 soundbanks.

Otherwise, stick to NL3. I was not too impressed with NL2 or especially 2x (sounded too bright, harsh, and down-right painful).

Bassline and lead is created by NL3 in this sample:
