Would people go to a BIG event in Kingston?!?!

I just need some general feedback on whether or not people would make the trip to Kingston to see a big name for a charity event. Montrealers this is for you too!!

Posted by Yohan on Aug-16-2006 17:12:

How big is this 'big name'?

IIRC there isn't much of a scene in Kingston, and how many people would actually make the drive from Toronto or Mtl this late in the summer?

Posted by Arsalan on Aug-16-2006 17:14:

i would drive there to spin

bring Yoji, I'll go

The plan was to get an AIDS event going and attract a mixed crowd from Toronto, montreal and rural ontario aswell. By 'big name' i mean the biggest names that we can get. You're right the scene in kingston is dominated by the Queen's students (i am one of them) but there is a VERY high rate of new appreciators and i want to capatalize on this.

I do have quite a few connection in Toronto and Montreal. Some people that i do events with know Tiga, for example.

Toss me some suggestions on how big and how many artists i would need and cost to attend also. That would be much appreciated guys and gals.

I'd go for the right big name. I love making a roadtrip out of events.

Posted by Moral Hazard on Aug-16-2006 17:25:

shit, I'll hardly make the drive to Toronto anymore.

Don't think Tiga is a big enough name... I think you'd have to organize the event and then hope people come.

what if Tiesto is in question. A little bit of a long shot but i could maybe do it.

I grew up in Kingston, I'd make the trip back.

I grew up in Kingston and the scene there is definately lacking and difficult. I know DJ's there struggling as it is so hopefully you would include local talent as well.

I hope that you can get something going there and I would do my best to support it,plus I have a bunch of friends still there. I just have one question though, what possible venue would you use there? I can't think of anywhere that would have the sound system or space you would need as I doubt Stages or AJ's would accomodate.

Posted by iLLnaDa on Aug-16-2006 18:06:

where? stages? Aj's ? cocomo's aka poke a Hoe

Stages and Aj's have brought big artists when i was there...so maybe they'll accomodate somethin big...but it has to be done after September when everyeones back to school!!

I went to Queen's and Kingston is DRY! but the restaurants there are FUCKING AMAZING...WOODENHEADS', GUSTO'S, HOPPIN EDDY'S, FTW!!!AND MEKONG!!!!!YUMMMMMMMMMMMMM

I was just in town for a week taking care of some school stuff and i went to stages on the sat night. I guess we showed up at the right time becuase the DJ there was dropping some SICK house tunes and you wouldn't beleive this but the club was RAMMED and bumping. i was shocked to see poeple enjoying it rather than just bobbing up and down! The sound was loud and crisp.

Stages would be a good choice because we could use the upstairs as VIP and downstairs for general admission.

Honestly, I don't know if it would work. You would have to do some major promo in TO and Montreal. There's a group of DJ's that have been trying to get a house night together at Smidgies, and the night I was there, it was dead. People just don't have an appreaciation for EDM music here. They just wanna hear Top 40 at Stages, and then some AC/DC or Guns and Roses. The music scene here is awful. I've been at Stages when the DJ will throw on some mainstream house and the whole dance floor clears.

Karen's right, AJ's nor Stages would accommodate an event like that, and if they did it would be a complete shit show...in a bad way.

Don't do pure Tranc eor house - make it a variety of genres.

Stages is always rammed when it is open as there really isn't anything else. I know the house night is new over the past yr and I know it is doing well. I also know some friends that have a night in town as well....the thing with Kingston, people don't know one DJ from the other for the most part.

But, if you did manage to pull off a night, House will do better then Trance there.

Yeah, but in all honesty the sound system in Stages sucks. Any good DJ would probably laugh at the system in there.

I went to a few parties in Kingston during the school year while up there. Had plenty of turn out!

The funny thing with them Nada, is they DJ here once and a while, and you'd think with all their productions that they know what to play, but they play dark tech house, which I can't even listen to, and I love trance and like house. There just isn't a scen here.

It's like Armin van Who...or Tiesto, who the fuck is that...that's how bad it is.

What's the capacity at Stages? How "BIG" of an event are you talking?
