Evil1 Another twist in the "Fair Use" saga

I thought it would be interesting to gain your perspective on this...

The MPA (Music Publisher's Association) have decided that the transcribing of guitar parts of songs should be punishable by jail time.

They deem it to be a violation of copyright, despite the scores not always being accurate and in essence, someone's interpretation of how a song is played. This also applies to publishing lyrics from songs too.

One site has relocated to Russia to avoid this (sweet move), but does anyone see this as a major violation of fair use as described in the DMCA?

Guitar riffs............jail time?

this hoopla is going on with lyrics too.

I find the lyrics part especially funny, because many cds these days dont even have lyrics in the inserts.

Do the artists get a say in the MPA decisions?
or is this bs done by a bunch of nobodys

Its nobodys, or at least nobodys who have no intention of protecting the artist's interests.
Its kind of the same situation as the RIAA, they claim to be looking after the artists income, yet how many bands or musicians own the publishing rights to their own songs?...

I occasionally teach guitar, so essentially I couldnt now transcribe a piece for a student to take home and learn as it would be an offence, despite it being my interpretation of a song.

I think this was brought to our attention a while ago, I think. It's just as bullshit now as it was then. They don't even give a damn about the artist's interests. They only care about their pockets.
