Hello! Party Review PvD @ CP, Fri Aug 18th and Sat Aug 19th

So, I decided to be a bit of a whore and create a thread ahead of time - in case someone at the party will want to post something.

From what I understand the Friday and Sat shows should be different, as both will be aired on Sirrius - so, I'm thinking that Friday show will most likely be Part I and Saturday will be Part II.

I ended up missing Friday show but it looks like I'm going to get my ass over there for Saturday gig. Should be wicked!

Post away

It started off alright/good, but somewhere around 8:30-8:45, he lost me and from that point on it sucked. What the fuck was with some of his tracks tonight. Alter Ego - Rocker, there were like 4 or 5 tracks that sounded awfully Swedish, so much so that I thought I might have missed his initation announcement. Also, his mixing was really shoddy tonight. I want to listen to this set again to see if my initial reaction remains, but overall, I had a decent time, but thought the music was lacking tonight.

Still a lack of port-a-johns. I didn't really use them after 7:30, but the line was absurd the last time I went. 25 is not enough for 5,000 people and I feel sorry for you kids going tomorrow who will experience it when it's more crowded.

one of my friends just called me - told me it was off tha hook. tho, it don't take much to invoke this type of reaction from him. so, what u tink?

I'm not seeing him tomorrow, but going in I said he'd really have to blow my mind tonight to see him again tomorrow. I know I'm not the only one who felt like I did, as others I talked to tonight had similar reactions. One of our friends who we only see at PvD and Sasha gigs said that in his 7 years seeing PvD, tonight was the most disappointing.

Also, he played As the Rush Comes, but at least it was some remix I didn't know prior

At the beginning of the night, though, I did say that I thought it was better during the daylight than Armin at Tobacco Warehouse if that says anything for you. Whereas Armin closed strong on Saturday, but opened slowly, PvD did the opposite.

That bastard did it out of spite.

I specifically singled that track out in the "don't play this" thread.

On the plus side, at least I don't recall him playing that piece of shit Plastic Fantastic.

AND.... It was better than last year, at least at parts. Last year @ CP was the worst set I've heard from him live, though, in probably 10 gigs in a 2-3 years.

As much as I havent been feeling his music for the last 4 gigs or so, this one blew it away. HE FUCKIN KILLED IT WITH SO MANY NEW TRACKS. Sure, he played some repeats but its expected. Mixing with ableton just sucks ass, not his fault, but thats just the way it is when the computer does it for u. Lasers were top notch. Overall, EXCELLENT NITE OUT.

Oh yeah, two different mixes of "The Other Side"

And I agree, yet again, great lights by Made. They were the most redeeming part of Armin and were up there yet again tonight as the highlights. I have some feeling that a lot of people enjoyed staring at trees tonight.

Off to hopefully a better time @ Element after grabbing some food.

i showed up, took one look at the crowd, thought about how disappointing last year's set was, and promptly sold my tickets...

as far the major draws go, i always felt that pvd drew a better crowd than tiesto, but that #1 is like a shit magnet..

on a brighter note, snakes on a plane was the most fun i've had at a movie in a long time =)

Posted by emc^2 on Aug-19-2006 04:16:

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that "right" PvD will show up tomorrow and beat the fuck out of me wiht killer beats. Ohterwise, i'll beat my almost $60 for ticket out of him tomorrow!

I want to slip him "diving faces" CD - see if he plays it live. I'd fucking die if he does.

tho, I"m not holding my breath, as I am sure he will only play "cleared" tracks, as it will air on sat radio.

hey guys just got home
crowd wasnt that bad i was up close the whole time ( if anyone noticed i was kinda to the left of the stage.. i was waving a pvd shirt like a cowboy at some period ofitme and i was right next ot the bald guy who kept somking cigs without filter)

btw the as the rush comes.. i think he remixed it cuz he started in Bart Claessen - Playmo then put in as the rush comes vocals then went back to playmo

i loved starry skies, i didnt get a poster iw as pissed lol it was just insane when he went down to autograph i coudlnt get anywhere near him , well kinda.. i bought one of his shirts.. overall i loved the music it was very danceable and i was happy to thew hole time, there was one major mess up wehre he himself didnt know hwat happend.. like ableton took control over the track or something, the drummer was cool.. who was he btw? i was happy that he didnt play nothing but you and crush, but i was really happy how he ended with for an angel.. i for one enjoed it very much.. if any of oyu guys were on-line early you woulda heard them test out avb - control freak ( sander van doorn rmx) which he played during the mix.. im sorry hitsi skinda unorganized, im still a bit tired/sleepy/ears ringing.. overall very happya nd will definatley og next year

good night folks

I went got there at 8-830. Thought the set was amazing. at times he layered 3-4+ tracks. there were 1 or 2 so-so mixes.

He played Autumn, New York, & Outside.

he played the other side once, then he played just the vocals over, man of god.

I want to know what his encore track was.

OH MY GOD DID HE SUCK TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!! I could not believe how horrible he played tonight, and he is my favorite DJ by far. I expected him to play so much longer, but if he would have kept spinning the same crap for another 2 or 3 hours i would have shot myself. It felt like every song he played had the same kind of bassline and funk rather than mixin that stuff up with really sick trance and progressive. The only really sick songs he played tonite were played before it started gettin dark outside, which is ridiculous, because when it gets dark, the ill shit should start pumping. I am very dissapointed that i had to pay $50 plus transportation costs to see him play for 4 hours. The only plus of the night was getting a poster signed, other than that, i hope when he comes back to roseland, he had read some of these reviews.

Sounds like last year.

well last time pvd played in nyc at roseland I thought it was probably his best or one of the best sets I ever heard him play. I've read different opinions, but everyone's different.

anyway, I've been watching pvd since 98, haven't really missed any of his shows when he plays nyc, but..
tonight was the worst set I've ever heard from the man.

of course, a lot of people were getting into it cause it's pvd & the bottom line is it's dance music so jump around & have a good time, but for pvd die-hards like myself, I was disappointed. at armin&bklyn warehouse I immediately knew I was on cloud 9, didn't feel a bit like that here. maybe cause it's an outdoor event, cause this is the first time I've seen pvd in central park, probably the last. will see him again in roseland in november & see how he plays. or maybe the people who go tomorrow will hear a good set from him? who knows

yep, too many 'wir sind wir' euro-type vocal trax, & who was that drummer looking like he's playing for metallica while no one was hearing a sound he made?

Posted by DOOMBOT on Aug-19-2006 04:59:

Wow Im so surprised to hear that his tracklist was crummy.

What I've found is that he's only really good at CP if the weather is lousy.

LOL What exactly do you mean that it's "not his fault" that mixing with ableton sucks ass? Ableton basically mixes for you. YAY! Computer mixing! If PVD wanted something different (God, it's sad that this has become "different") he could go back to vinyl.

....

....

....

But really I don't understand what you mean by "not his fault" when he chose Ableton and has stuck with it for dozens and dozens of gigs.

it seems to me that ever since he started with his laptop and fancy mixing programs a few years ago, i have been liking him less and less. i thought tonight was terrible too. next year i am going to be one of those smart people who save themselves the inflated ticket price and sit outside.

word. you beat me to it. it was just the chorus vocals to ATRC sampled over the other track. does that still count as playing it?

he means paul did not make a mistake at the moment such as: hitting the wrong key on his laptop, the power button, or closing the lid causing it to goto stand-by, the error came randomly from the software itself making it "not his fault". Choosing Ableton for his gigs is also not a fault of his, avoiding a type of equipment because of the error chance is just silly. cds skip, needles jump, lappys crash. As far as Ableton "doing the mixing for you", that is irrelevant. He is not mixing with Ableton. He is layering multiple tracks and samples to create music on the fly. Yes to the regular joe this all sounds the same because they have never heard the original track to begin with. However, from the DJ perspective, it gets boring mixing in and out of tracks after you have done it for over a decade: he's keeping himself from getting bored, and at the same time giving the hardcore fans [TA] something new to listen to. Hope that confused you silly.

I loved it after the first 1/2 hour and before the last hour, relentless and good. Two times for The Other Side was completely unnecessary, but that mix of As The Rush Comes is fantastic. The last hour was just uneven, too much slowing it down, and lowering the volume in favor of the drummer, which could have been fine but for the fact that I couldn't hear him. An odd night overall. Made even more odd because we decided to go to B.E.D. afterwards, which was all about hip hop and sluts. And we liked it. Weird.
