Mixing Online

Hey, I didn't know where to put this but I have a question about mixing online.

Is there a site where... say, you could mix like into your mic input on the back of your comp and have a few friends listen in? Like a chat website kinda...

I've always wanted to do this for my friends, now that we are off at college it seems like a fun "get-together" idea...

any sites? Or is it just better to upload it somewhere...

Thanks,
Geoff

you will have to configure some ports on your router (if you are using one). then just give your IP address to the friends that you want tuned in and they should be able to stream live off your connection.

i'm not sure about this, but back in the day i used to run a shoutcast server off my ip with stuff i downloaded from their website and people could tune into it by loading up my ip or dns in their 'open location' of winamp.
hope that helped
hah

See I tried to do that but it just didn't work! Nor, I don't think my friends would be smart enough to try to find me like that...

I used to use Traktor with the built-in IceCast (open-source version of Shoutcast) server functionality. Well, I used it as a source for an IceCast server that I ran on my computer.

If you want to run a server off of your own computer, you have to have the bandwidth (how fast your Internet connection is) to support it. For example, if you set the encoded quality at 64KB/s, your connection has to support 64KB/s * number of listeners.

I may be paraphrasing information you can find online, but basically, there are two things you need:
server- program that broadcasts your stream (on a particular IP address and port) and;
client - program that connects to the server, usually the source of your audio.

The downside to IceCast is that it encodes in Ogg/Vorbis format, which some media players do not support out-of-the-box.

In any case, there is a program called OddCast (http://www.oddsock.org/tools/oddcastv3/) that you can use as a client. You can use it to stream from your soundcard (eg. Line In), and last time I checked, supports many popular formats.

Good luck!

you also have to make sure to forward your broadcasting ports if you're using a router/firewall/both
