VJing

hi guys,

I've done a quick search on this stuff, but couldn't find anything so i tried using VJ1000 as my search (pioneer's VIdeo Player).

I guess it's something that's pretty new, and hasn't really taken off...

what do you guys think of it, and for those of you who've done it, what's it like, how is it different, how does the crowd react?

This is something that interests me, but the cost is a bit prohibitive (for the DVJ's I mean). There are other software lternatives I think, but I need more than that. I need a new computer, not to mention projectors/screens etc.
Check out djforums, I think there's a section there from memory.

Does the VJ spin music videos off DVDs?

I've made a couple of music videos from footage of old movies and whatnot. You can whip one into rough shape in a few days, but to get it tweaked nice takes a lot longer.

Posted by Abhay on Aug-24-2006 06:38:

hmm,

I think i've seen it done in clubs...

i don't see the point, no-one takes any notice of it.

Fck yes, thank god somebody asked this! Iv been looking around to see if theres any sort of programs out there you can setup to play visualisations off monitors? Anyone know?

Id love to get that setup and then bounce the signal off the tv.. that'd be crazy

That list is so outdated that guy who runs that website is a bit of an oddball actually.

In regards to software, I recommend either Resolume, Motion Dive ( japanese software that's rather expensive ), or Grid from www.vidvox.net .

I think the best way to operate is like this:
one or two dvd players ( you will need some premixed content or extended loops on dvds )
one or two laptops ( running video mixing or clip triggering software )
a video mixer ( cheap good starter ( 200$ on ebay )is Panasonic Ave-5 or else the 'reference' in the vj world the Edirol V4 ( 900$)!

And obviously video projectors etc.
AND MAKE YOUR OWN CONTENT!

I did a lot of gigs with many prominent djs ( Pvd etc ) and I must say the crowd reaction isn't there as people come to see the djs not the visuals.
But it certainly adds to the vibe in ways that the people don't usually notice. Many times I have bumped into people at another club or just outside ( in real life basically ) where they recognized me and made comments on how much they appreciated the stuff.
It's better to have the visuals very visible ( no pun intended ) and not just shown in a corner of the club.

You'll never get direct recognition when doing your gig or very rarely but there are still some people who pay attention.

Here's a pic of a setup I did once:

This was the back of the room ( I was on stage when I took the picture ) and there wasn't any way we could install the projector to points towards the stage.
Simple solution, installed a bunch of tvs on the stage right underneath the dj booth, so everyone really noticed the visuals.

This is a very wide subject, if you have any specific questions let me know I'll gladly help.

I saw a VJing act at this years Sziget Festival in Budapest, "Addictive TV" from the UK. That was really something new, the visuals really add a lot to the whole club experience.

Check them out here:

i also would like to add that the edirol visual synth is great live hardware vjing tool. it converts jpg's into 3d motion visuals u can manipulate.
i use resolume2 and midi keyboard atm! but as always people, hardware will be next.

for me its all about vjing/djing/production just to take it to another level than just music.
soon i tell you vj's will be popular than dj's for sure even though it has nothing to do with music. its an art coming through the cracks.

oh by the way has anyone used thier own fractal algorithyms in vjing?
fractals are pretty trippy.

that is one of the most entertaining and sickest things i've ever seen.
I'd love to see something like that in a club.

but it kinda sucks that there seems to be a fairly limited number of tracks that actually have videos for VJing.

If you don't want to spend six grand on a Pioneer DVJ set up, then hold off until Serato adds video to their software. Serato already announced they're working on it. Also, Ableton Live 6 will let you mix videos as well.
