Read This! Want more drive? Try this subbassline tutorial!

Hey Guys!

I thought i would share someting on how i do my subbass! This may not be to all tastes, but i have put up a picture tutorial on how to make a quick, easy and driving subbass!

Hope youll like it! It punches good in my speakers, and it sound good

So.. i will go throuh all steps by in what order i would put them in my sequencer. 1 Vst, 2 Comp, 3 Eq, 4 The saturator!

1). I set up my Bassline vst from Audiorealism (Dont have it? GET IT!). Some easy settings as you can see! But put extra attension to the volume knob!

2). Here i have put the Live plugin Compressor 1 , with the settings shown, but you can use another later if you dont like it!

3) Here i have put some eq on the bass, and im using the Waves Q10 Paragraphic EQ , and the settings shown in the picture. However, this is something you could tweak later so that it fits nice with your kick.

4) Now the last and most essential part of the bass. Here is where we put the drive in the bass. I have used the Live Saturator and put it on Sine drive and then the setting shown!

So there you have it, and now you can start to play around!
Cheer

thanks man, I'll check it out. Do you know of an alternative for the Live saturator? I want to set this up in SX, without having to Rewire to Live.

Cool tutorial, thx for the effort.
An alternative for those not owning bassline and (the ridiculous overpriced) waves plugins would be to use a saw and a sine on a synth, along with some overdrive. Check some other EQ-plug-ins such as the voxengo stuff, their free stuff is really awesome, the other vst's are only a fraction of the price of waves.

Just a little question: is a wise to set a bass to full width? (I don't know live so forgive me if this is a stupid question lol)

looks great mate. going to check this one out when i get my comp fixed. my audiorealism looks like shit compared to that. lol. wheres that eq from?

Posted by Beautiful Beast on Aug-21-2006 22:43:

So what about a good repacement for the Live Saturator?

thanks again Substorm.

I know its overprice, but the guy at the music store said that it was one of the best, so i just took it, but i like it! But i realized later that i there are other, cheeper eqs that is just as good!

Any way, regariding your question. I guess you mean, is it wise to have such a wide freq.range on the bass? Well, the purpose of this bass, is that it should be played on a low volume and the layerd with some mid and high basslines. When you mix this bassline, you should add it almost as the last thing. Start at 0 when you play your mix and then slow turn it up until you feel and hear when it starts to work with your kick!

Dont know if this is the best way to do it, but i works for me, and hopefullly i will work for you

Cheers

Ok , does the Bassline come in different uniforms? :P Didnt know that. hehe..

The Eq is from Waves, but any good eq will work, but i always suggest using a paragraphic eq. I find it easyer to work with!

Substorm, thanks, I downloaded one of the dll files.

BTW: I own a TB303 but the Doepfer sync box Iuse died on me. So I can use "the real thing" but it will obviously not keep in sync. I am actualy thinking: should I replace the Doepfer sync to midi box or should I just use AR Bassline? Go figure....

Substorm, I e-mailed you a cool skin for AR Bassline on [email protected]

Not quite, what I actually meant is the width of the sound signal of the saturator, afaik it's best to keep the bassy signals mono as much as possible in order to avoid problems on larger sound systems (and skipping needles). Could be wrong though, that's what I was wondering .

Ohh, that one, well it didnt seem to do what it says! What mean is that when i experimented with it, the width knob, doesnt really change the width of the signal. It may sound strange, but i couldnt hear or see any difference in that matter, but i felt i made the bass warmer and got a more "real" analog fealing. But i think it up to taste! Maybe its wrong, but im not a educated sound designer, i just go with what ound good. hehe..

So wait...

Why is your Bass EQed all the way up to 16000k?

Posted by ONION on Aug-22-2006 03:40:

I use saturation quite a fair bit. I find that when I mix my tracks through it on the master channel in particular that everything gels a lot more.... keep in mind theres different types of distortion / saturation - Tube / Solid State / Tape etc...

Try the different emulations on your basslines to see which you prefer.... Personally I like tape on basslines.

Yeah, I use my TB303 less nowadays, since I'm more PC based. It still rocks tho. Funny thing thing is I bought it 15 years ago (when they were ridiculously pricey) for euro 130 !!

So you think I should replace the Doepfer sync box then , eh?

great tut substorm - i use ableton as well so will be having a shifty at this one thanks man!

Posted by djms on Aug-22-2006 09:13:

did you use the kick bass kick bass note structure for it or a straight line note sidechaining to the kick?

Posted by DeZmA on Aug-22-2006 09:45:

There's other patterns too you know.. I hate both the kick bass kick and the sidechaining technique (which is the kick sidechained to the bass btw).

I've had it with you childish morons on this forum swearing for every quote they get asking the most retarded questions ever, wth is going on here?

Posted by djms on Aug-22-2006 10:32:

twat is not a swear word - it's a word used for people who havent read things properly then responded like what you did.

You said "there's other patterns too you know" to suggest that it was that pattern I said he had used. I was only using that pattern as an example to ask him exaclty what pattern he did use for his sub.

and why is asking what pattern he used a retarded question. Sort yourself out twat.

Posted by DeZmA on Aug-22-2006 10:39:

1. twat - a man who is a stupid incompetent fool
2. twat - obscene terms for female genitals

Sounds very positive indeed, ah well, I'm not gonna waste substorm's work here on the topic. I'll keep out, just don't think because someone isn't native English he doensn't understand you.
