Progressive and tech house

There was probably a topic like this before, but the search function isn't really helping me... So, anyway, I've been listening to progressive house in last few months... Supposedly. You know, Balance series, Renaissance series and stuff like that. However, I still can't say that I know the main characteristics of progressive house and the main difference between progressive house and regular house (e.g. David Guetta, Bob Sinclar, Antoine Clamaran). I mean, I can tell when I hear regular house, but doing the same with progressive house is a little more difficult. So, I'm asking you to explain to me those things and, if possible, back it up with sample(s) of what you think is real progressive house. Oh, and you might be wondering why's there tech house in subject... Well, the same question goes for tech house. I wanna know how it sounds as well.

Progressive house is more instrumental than regular house, and is considered "deeper". It uses progressive structures similar to trance, as progressive house and trance are very similar. Progressive house though, tends to sound a little more on the rhythmic side (does have melody but not as important), where progressive trance is a combination of rhythm and melody. Regular (or chigago/new york/classic/vocal) house sounds more like disco, as house came out of disco, and the tracks themselves are shorter and simpler and more melodic and harmonic...

A lot of "regular" house is more vocal based, and pop-like, but there are acid house, tech house, micro-house, deep house and other forms of house which are sound more underground. I would say that "atmosphere" is most important thing, as progressive house and trance try to create an atmosphere. Progressive house isn't completely underground, but it's not really mainstream either, but it depends on the track. It's kind of like a more instrumental deep house, but a bit faster and a lil' less jazzy.

Progressive house...think Dave Seaman, Nick Warren, Sasha (well his older stuff at least, maybe his newer stuff too...like Involver), John Digweed (when he isn't playing electro-minimal type stuff like in Trasitions), Deep Dish and Hernan Cattaneo. Regular house, think David Morales, Lil Louie Vega, Frankie Knuckles and Danny Tenaglia.

Tech house..forgot about that. It's just what the name implies, techno and house music combined. I guess you could say it has the technological sound found in techno and acid house (Roland 303 type sounds) with a funky, laid back vibe found in house. I'm not too familiar with tech-house artists or DJs though, but I am sure plenty of house DJs also play tech house, don't know any DJs that specifically play this style. I'm sure you could find some of this in Carl Cox sets, but he tends to play more bangin' European and U.S. techno.

�me - Rej is also a good example of tech house imo.
