Nem is hanging up the headphones...

Dear all,

You may wonder why I am writing this.

Well guys, I have come to a point in my life were I have to take a look and see what is going on.

As many of you already know I have been doing this for over 20 years, and I have had the privilege of playing sets alongside some of the greatest names in dance music, some of who I have even developed various degrees of friendship with some of them and for that I have counted myself blessed in many ways.
I have had the privilege of warming up or closing for people like Marco V, M.I.K.E., Joy Kitikonti, Judge Jules, Eddie Halliwell, Tiesto, JFK, Fergie, Carl Cox, Matt Hardwick, Simon Patterson (from Dogzilla) John Kelly, Brandon Block, Scott Bond, Ferry Corsten and played some great clubs too including the Ministry of Sound back in its heyday, Gatecrasher nights and plenty of other cool venues. For this I am truly grateful.

What I find now
As I go to work at the weekends I so more and more younger faces, which is a good thing, but at the same time a look at the older DJs like myself who are still hanging in there and I ask myself, Am I just hanging in there as well?. Maybe Im just hanging onto something that isnt there for me anymore.

I am at a stage now where the only way that I can justify the lifestyle I have would be if I was making a lot of money off it and I have other things I want to do too just havent figured out what yet.

I kid you not people, DJing 3 to 4 times every weekend and some midweek jobs too is hard work, stressful and does loose its appeal after some time. I love what I do, but I also love my family and a wife who I love, and even though they have been very supportive its time I give something back to them.

Once I have finished my last bookings in Ibiza I will be flying off to India again for a well deserved break and then I will take a look at what the future holds.

I am not saying that I give up DJing for good, but I am giving up until further notice.

The world of the DJ is changing with digital and Ableton etc. I like mixing with CDs but I am just not feeling Ableton Live. I have played a few sets at home and to be honest, I find that it has made what I do a matter of just pushing buttons and minimizes what I get out from it. Its probably the future, but its one that Im not a part of and dont wish to be.

The final word from Nem is that from the 1st September 2006 my DJ career will be officially over and I am hanging up my headphones.

A side note is that I am still making music, and should something go right for me you would see a return, but its a dog eat dog world out there and for the time being I will be doing what I want to so that I can in time re-discover the joy and enthusiasm that it once gave me.

To all the new guys out there I wish you all the success in the world. I will be back on the forums every now and again but for the time being I feel I need to take a complete break just to find my direction.

I will miss you guys as I have made some good friends here and I have enjoyed sharing some of my experiences and hopefully for what they are worth they may have helped someone.

Couldnt resist putting in my highlight tunes that I have played during my career. These may not have been the best tunes overall but these are the tunes that defined everything that made me want to be a DJ. Based on crowd reaction and personal reasons.

10. Ayla -Ayla
9. Blank & Jones - Cream
8. Inzite - Spellbound
7. Jose Amnesia The Eternal
6. Randy Katana In Silence
5. Saltwater The Legacy
4. Gouryella - Tenshi
3. Push Strangeworld (2000 remake)
2. Tiesto Suburban Train
1. Energy 52 Caf Del Mar

Caf del Mar defined the Ibiza experience for me both as a clubber and a DJ.

All the best and good luck in the pursuit of your dreams.
Karl

PS
If you have a question for me then send me a tell and I will give you my e-mail address it can even be if you want to stay in contact or you want me to listen to a set. I will do my best to answer as long as time allows.

Thats a damn shame dude. I've never asked you for help personally but I know you've been a pretty integral part of this section of TA for quite awhile. I wish you the best. Enjoy the vacation.

Best of luck.

I've seen you post on here a lot and helping out people here, big ups to that and we'll all miss you here! Like all the others have said, nothing but respect and admiration comes from me bro. Good luck with the future plans and stuff. I wish and hope for the best for you!

Keep in touch.

Stay in Touch nem- pm me!

Expect a post like this from me in a few months too- I am giving it up professionally for good soon too. It is not the same as it was, and more importantly I am not the same person I was when i started doing this. 4 nights a week is more tiring than it sounds as you know.

All the best buddy

Posted by Ryan0751 on Aug-25-2006 13:37:

I can't say I blame you... I work a regular office job all week, and I couldn't see myself playing out more than 2-3 times a month at most. I just had my 3rd 'real' gig last weekend, and while it was fun it was a lot of stress leading up to it.

I suppose that will pass with time, but I kept asking myself "This is a hobby, why am I so stressed out? Is this fun?".

And maybe I'm just getting older, but the 'scene' definately wears on you. Shady people, drunken/drugged up messes, etc.

I can't imagine working in clubs as often as you do...

Posted by miamitranceman on Aug-25-2006 14:23:

Best of luck man.

Posted by Fearless One on Aug-25-2006 15:56:

i hope you won't regret your choice...
i'm sure you want

i assume that giving up djing don't mean giving up dj booth ;P this forum without your post wouldn't be the same place

Posted by KilldaDJ on Aug-25-2006 16:02:

heartbreaking stuff man.

Posted by |E on Aug-25-2006 16:08:

This board will be far worse off with out you Nem, and you know it

I hope you find what you're looking for, even if it has nothing to do with music and DJ'ing.

Thankyou for all the time you've spent helping others and myself directly and indirectly, i have nothing but praise for you.

*PM being sent*

Wow I have really enjoyed your posts over the years. but you definitely deserve a break, it sounds like you are kinda burnt out. I get the same way here at uni. This will be my 8th year in college, ive been getting degrees and everything, but I still have a while to go and I just wanna go to india and take a break.

but best of luck to ya. and can I get on your promo lists now that you dont need them

Posted by Allayla on Aug-25-2006 16:35:

Karl,

Just wanted to add that you have been a huge help for me and many others here on the forum. Ive only been mixing for two months but before i even started, still actually, ive been searching your posts because they've been so informative and helpfull in many ways. Now that i have all my gear and have the basics down, im already mixing harmonicly thanks to you and others who have helped in your thread. I think that your making the right decision by giving back to your family, that makes you a stand up guy. Good luck with your new ventures in life and keep in touch, your help has been much appreciated around here.

Posted by Danila on Aug-25-2006 17:15:

Best of luck man

I wasnt even born when you started to DJ

Posted by Zild on Aug-25-2006 17:23:

Wow I don't know what to say. I'll try my best to help others the way you have helped me. Best wishes.

Posted by Nemesis44 on Aug-25-2006 18:23:

Thank you guys, this is heartwarming indeed.

As many of you have stated, it's a tough decision, but at this point I just feel I have to take a break to work out if I miss it or not. Don't worry though, I can see myself sneaking back once in a while. Just to see how life is going for the rest of you.

Burnt out is probably the best description of the situation I'm in. I'm at a stage at the moment when listening to music can almost annoy me and that's not the way it was supposed to be.

I will be focussing a lot more on my own productions now and may even move away from trance for the time being.

Thanks for all the PMs

And in the immortal words of Hariz...

Cheers
Nem
