Giving Armin his last chance...

Going to see mr Van Buuren tonight @ Godskitchen in Birmingham and having listened to some quality ASOTs recently am looking forward to a great 4 hour set...

HOWEVER, the last 3 times I've seen him he has been rather disappointing, the sets not really flowing or taking you on a journey like they used, not uplifting enough. I'm hoping he plays better this time but if not I'm going to unattatch the implied excellent trance set from his name!

He plays exactly what he plays on ASOT, in a different order. He may throw in one or two new tracks. I fail to see how you wouldn't like it if you like ASOT

No there's potential from ASOT to make great sets but he chooses the crappy stuff, e.g. Racoon - Love You More is good for home listening but shouldnt be in a set at a club, if I hand picked a set from the last 4 weeks of ASOT + some older stuff it would be brill!

Armin is a fine dj. Mixing is flawless and he plays w/ tremendous enthusiasm (Enthusiasm prob comes from a big pay check!ha). His sets do have a "flow" even now.
My guess is you are just outgrowing that sound. I rarely ever listen to ASOT any more. I just don't like it, and years ago I looked forward to the show every week.

I thought about that but I dont think I am, someone like Andy Bagguley plays uplifting trance and i absolutely adore his sets as he doesnt play chunky or cheesy stuff, just uplifting trance!

Have fun! He will play some stuff from current ASOT shows and some not from ASOT. So he keeps ya on your toes most of the night because ya get a few classics in there as well. Hope he throws down a killer set for ya, I'll be seeing him in 2 weeks in DC!

Let's not forget that the "sound" has changed over the past half-decade. It's not that most have outgrown the sound. It's more likely that they just don't like the current trance trends.

eh? in asot he plays pretty much 100% upfront/unreleased stuff, whereas every time i've seen him out he's played alot more released stuff people already know, intertwined with his own productions.

and he plays it in pretty much the same order each time

You do realise that its very difficult to play a new different track every time you are on decks right? I mean new tracks are not released every minute.. When you play 7 days a week.. your are bound to repeat tracks; in different venues..

Have fun !

hey doombot, i'll be at glow also, man 6 hr. set is gonna be crazy, only dj i've seen go that long in person is pvd. can't wait.

Armin music wise has lost it to a degree. COmpare what he was playing in 2004 to what he plays now its all commercially accessable tunes or as i like to call it "ASOT by numbers". Too many anthems although mixed well just dont suit his older euphoric and bombbastic style

The last time i saw him play a truely amazing set was at Global in 2004. Although still anthemic it was as uplfiting as it gets and hit with so much energy it had people who hated trance talking about it afterwards. Bring back that style and ill start really liking Armin as a DJ again. Just now hes like all the rest for me.

You would think with his radio show his sets would be peppered with new tunes but its the complete opposite these days which is the most sad thing.

New tracks are released all the time. With the internet and production programs for computers there are an infinite supply of chumps who think they can produce making productions. And despite there being a large chunk of tripe being released, there's also a whole sheot ton of legimate, good tracks being made. That's one of the problems right now are the vast amount of digital labels signing all sorts of tracks. There's no shortage of an influx of productions Armin could choose from and incorporate into his set. It's not that he couldn't throw down at least one new track in each of his sets that no one has heard of because he could easily hire someone like Sasha has to go out and find tracks that fit the bill of his current sound. He's just decided to play it safe and play exactly what's on ASOT but in a different order, possibly throwing one new track that will be on ASOT next week for a bit of flavor.

Trust me, I've been there. And yes, it's easy to find new, good songs out there for free that no one knows about. I do it all the time. It just takes the ability to think two layers deep and explore on your own rather than be happy with what everyone already likes.

I really think you're analyzing this way too much. Armin's a performer. Major music stars don't really change their concert performances at all from each location they visit because they know the fans aren't gonna follow them to every show they do. The same goes for big DJ's like Armin, and I don't think he should be expected to set up a dramatically different tracklist for EVERY gig just because internet message board readers track every set he does every day. Additionally, maybe he plays what he does because he LIKES the tracks and believes the majority of fans who go to see him will want to hear certain tracks. Hearing stuff live is totally different than hearing it at home, as I'm sure you know. That's all there is to it.

No one can like tracks that much. I complain about any big namer that has the exact same playlist over and over again, or if they have the same playlist as their radio show. No one can like the same songs over and over again, night after night, show after show. It's just safe. If they do then they've done more drugs than I could ever hope to do or they've clinically gone deaf. It's more laziness I'd say

Who knows, I could be over-analyzing it, but it just seems like sheer laziness.
