spirit shut down

August 26, 2006 -- Cops shut down the club Spirit last night - one of the beleaguered clubs on the wild row of West 27th Street between 10th and 11th avenues.
The order came as a result of a police initiative that began shortly after 18-year-old Jennifer Moore was raped and murdered on July 25 following a night of drinking at Guest House, a few doors away from Spirit at 530 W. 27th St.

Since then, cops have caught three underage drinkers inside Spirit, witnessed others smoking pot, as well as drug sales.

Fifty people were inside Spirit when cops raided it at 10:30 p.m., but scores were left waiting outside.

A lawyer for Spirit, which also was shut down March, 31 along with six other clubs, had no doubt the club would once again reopen.

"I am extremely confident that once all the facts are presented to the judge, we will be immediately reopened," said lawyer Albert Santoro.

lol i love wat the lawyer says i wish him the best of luck with all that evidence

Police close Spirit nightclub for drug, alcohol violations
Associated Press
Saturday Aug 26, 2006

A nightclub on a Manhattan stretch popular with the gay community has been closed by authorities for repeated alcohol and drug violations, police said.

Acting on a court order, police said they closed Spirit nightclub Friday evening at about 10 p.m. The shutdown came midway through the all-male revue "Hunk-O-Mania," according to a schedule posted on Citysearch.

The venue is on the same block in western Chelsea as the nightclub Guest House - where a New Jersey teenager went drinking and partying last month before she was beaten and strangled. The death of 18-year-old Jennifer Moore has heightened concerns about underage drinking and safety in the area.

Police have said that the block, 27th Street between Tenth and Eleventh avenues, houses a complex of clubs that has become a magnet for drug-dealing, assaults and robberies.

Spirit had been under observation by the New York Police Department since it was closed for about a week in March for drug incidents and underage drinking, police said. Since then, police say they have observed marijuana being smoked openly in the club, and they have seen alcohol sold to underage patrons.

Authorities have also made four arrests for the use and sale of cocaine and ecstasy, police said.

The NYPD requested the clubs closure for the repeated violations, and the venue was to remain shuttered pending a court hearing, police said.

A message left on the clubs answering machine was not immediately returned early Saturday.

i think it was hip hop on main floor, BUT with a vocal house performance by ROB PINE (dude that sang on BOB SINCLAR's "love generation" and "world hold on") and house in the other room upstairs.... terrible

Thanks, I was just curious how this'll affect the other clubs. I haven't heard of much EDM going on at Spirit lately, but wasn't sure.

Who's surprised?

This was coming... All of the 27th street clubs are suffering. Too bad.

ever since that 18 year old girl from Jersey was found dead in NYC the cops have been all over 27th street where spirit is every weekend just looking for any reasons to bust people. Kind of unfortunate because it was not guest houses fault really and not Spirits fault really either.

The girl got a ride with an acquaintance to nyc. After guest house they came back to the car and it had been towed because it was illegally parked. They went to the pound to pick up their car and got separated there. The girl drunk, alone, in the middle of nowhere (not sure where the impounded car lot is) in an unfamiliar city ended up dead. The crime didnt occur around spirit or guest house but that street with spirit and guest house has been where the police have been targeting for the past few weeks.

I hate these fuckin laws about alochol, if your served booke at a club or a bar you still get in trouble since you served. That just but on the other hand she was under 21. So its lost sitution and then clubs start to get raided by NYPD

Posted by AY STAR on Aug-27-2006 16:22:

werd the nypd is not fukin around
its like the guilianni era again
but its sad to say that drugs and clubs go together
i mean on some nights its worse then others like a jp crowd
and on other nights you have to asian swing dancers all banged up on watever
i honestly dont know whats gonna happen but the nypd is not fukin around i heard crobar was shut down last night
because the cops were outside just doing there random bullshit and then they saw bouncers throwing a few people out because of a fight so they shut it down at like 5am
i know i would be pissed if i payed money to see a dj and halfway threw the set the music shuts off and i had to leave cause of some dumb crackhead

Posted by stevebutabi on Aug-27-2006 17:22:

it's funny... when spirit opened up it was supposed to be this well-being-inspired, holistic place. obviously that wasn't going to make any money in the nyc nightlife arena, but it has been interesting to see the absolute 180 that the place has taken.

am i to assume that there was a management change along the way?

also: s&d at twilo ----> hunk-o-mania at spirit what a sad progression for that building!

it's also the cops faults for letting young girls wonder around alone like that in the fuckin city after certain hours not to mention that towing cars doesn't help either, these cops are also held accountable for the peoples actions!

I also really do think that its sad that these cops are cracking down on every single of these fuckin clubs, its getting really stupid and out of control! it seems as though they want to shut down every single of these clubs, and yea ok people do drugs, some people are underage, at the clubs thats just part of the nightlife and thats the reality of it! its everywhere around the world, they need to get a fuckin clue and understand that if they decide to have clubs around here this is how it is.
