Help With Soundproofing
hey guys - just moved into my college appt room and im getting serious reverberations and such throughout the room even at low levels on my monitors. i need help dampening the room so people cant hear it as much throughout the appt AND so i can get a clearer more realist sound coming from my monitors! i am totally new to dampening as my old room was suffiencently proofed before i bought monitors! any help would be wonderful!

walls
hang heavy curtain along the walls, it's the cheapest and probably best solution in your situation
velvet usually works the best, but any heavy fabric will do
I guess the biggest thing would be to make sure your speakers aren't coupling with your desk or the walls or anything like that, so put them on some pillows or something like that.
The next thing would be to fill the room with clutter, that is a fairly cheap solution. Try to put some squishy things in corners especially.
I live in a little apartment surronded by college kids as well, and they can't stand trance so they hate when I make too much noise, the problem with bass is that it just shakes everything and goes right through the thin apartment walls.
Hang up lots of quilts and tapestries and stuff, try to find thick ones.
quilts and blankets work really well.
Put them under your door in particular. If you can buy a few quilts, hang them up around all 4 walls surface, and make sure u seal up the door.
If you have spare fabric left over put extras on the corners.
It's a bit extreme, but hey, it works pretty well. Turn the bass down while you mix, it isn't really all that necessary anyway.
so ur wall is gonna look like a fucking giant quilt?!
fuck that just buy that foam they sell and clue it, looks nicer.

Harriz is so right. Blankets will help dampen the highs and mids, but won't do anything to proof your room.
Essentially is you want to sound proof, rip out all your walls and start from the inside out.
There are plenty of quicker fixes though, but you better be ready to D.I.Y.!
say if your sound-proofing stuffs have been there for maybe 1-2 years, would hygiene be a problem then? cuz yanno, the air aren't circulating that much, some get stuck into the foams/watever it is made of.
just another quick one tho, would there be a big difference when producing with a sound-proofed room compared to one that isn't?
your friends will think you a loony with a fetish having stained quilts stuck on the wall
Why dont you buy some cheap MDF or wood and build a small square box big enough for you and all your gear. add a door and then pad the inside with quilts or foam and then cover that with some thin wood or more MDF, your own mini studio
just dont forget to put in an air vent !!

Quilts or foam won't do much at all for soundproofing. The bass will still escape through the walls and door. You would have to build thicker walls or create a "room within a room". Maybe bass traps would work though? I'm not sure.

Hi.
Some great advice in this thread. When starting to do anything you should really keep focus on your goal with the room and treatment, i.e. do you want to use it for vocal tracking, control room monitoring or is the purpose only to make sure that no sounds from inside get out and vice versa. Anyhow, this is a great article with some good advice:

Wow! some great ideas from all of you i Reallllly appreciate the help. Ill sort out all the posting ideas and come up with something in between.. obviously in a perfect world id be able to proof it properly and what not but really im just looking for the most effective way to treat my room so i have as little noise overflow and whatnot into the rest of the appt (i.e. so i dont piss off my roommates... haha) this appt is so fuckin flimsy (college appts... fuck em) that even with my monitors on 20% theres a fair amount of reverberation and distortion which is a big problemo if im trying to produce professionally hahaha
AGAIN: thanks so much fellas, reallly appreciate the help! and yeah i agree this actually turned into quite a good forum thread!
hey,
stop putting down blankets you guys. Blankets are cool.
But yeah, it doesn't do anything for the bass. but like i said, u'll just have to turn that down, as it's not that necessary to practice with. Just a little bit of bass should be enough.
Personally, i use the blankets. I think it works, and ppl living in the flats around me says it makes it quieter.
Or you could just mix in your headphones.
But yeah dude, if u have the money, just get the insulative material. The stuff is a lot more effective than blankets, judging from my experiences with it in uni.
Seems to be a distinction here, there are decorative quilts and there are quilts you roll around on in your bedroom, I wouldnt suggest putting those on your walls.
But being from the south there are quite alot of quilts available that look really nice and wouldnt be the kind of thing you'd lay on your bed and get stains all over.
I really should get some pics of mine, I use them for decoration rather than sound treatment though.
Putting treatment in the room will help to give the room a flatter response, however it will not prevent the spill into the next room. The only way to achieve soundproofing is to get issolation which is costly and pointless if the room is not 'yours' (ie college dorm).
I guess we brough up treatment rather than soundproofing because people so often talk about both of these issues at the same time. If I was worried about other people getting annoyed by my tracks, I'd move out in the country, but that is alot easier to do here than it is in most cities.
