Dunno Polar shifts and their effects...

I saw a documentary on the earths magnetic feild. Apparently were long overdue for a polar shift. I'm curious as to what the consequences would of that would be. Polar shits are not a stable process. By that I mean it's going to flip a few times before it stabalized, resuliting in North and South to be reversed. Earth's magnetic sheild also keeps out many undesirable frequncies and affects the atmosphere in a way I can't atriculate rightnow (basically, weakening of the magnetic feild isn't very good for the atmosphere). Has anyone researched this stuff before? When it does occur, would it be a catasrophic event?
