Melodies for projects that may/don't work

I used to make like 5 melodies a day in FL last year. I've been looking through some of them lately. I see a lot of cool stuff i can use now. There's a problem though, because i didn't make all my melodies 8,16,32 beats long. Some of them are 12,20,24 beats long. Some of them are in 120BMP, when I wish they were in 140BPM. Anyways, is using a melody that is 20 beats long a problem?

Yes, you can use a 12/20 bar melody.

I used to think that 4/8 bar melodies were the standard that should be strictly adhered to. But I don't think like that anymore, because I used to aim for those specific numbers of bars and ended up being stuck in that mindframe. I was musically limited to 4 to 8 bars, which kind of sucked.

Using different length bars is much more "song like" if you will. Instead of it sounding like you lumped together a few 4 / 8 / 16 bar loops, it sounds human and unpredictable. Much better, IMO.

i hate melodys that dont fit into a certain timeframe, makes it so hard to mould and mutate, often goes against that 4/4 beat ive laid down as well and say like i wanted an arpeggio underneath it, that would get confused as well

Cool, because most of the time I make melodies and do absolutely nothing with the timefrime...just making sure they sound ok when looped.
