Artifical Intelligence on the Internet

There's a short version for the CORe massive at the end of this post.

1. Why the hell is Lira talking about AI?

• Lots of free time, which I'm sure using for study and programming.
  
• XHTML & CSS
  
• PHP & MySQL (I've developed a few databases, and I managed to do quite well with all the information involved)
  
• Perhaps, if ever, some JavaScript
  
• Some stuff I've got ahold of lately, related to Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Mind, Learning Methods, Information Architecture and, of course, AI.
  

2. So, what's the question here?

• A PageRank sort of organisation system.
  
• An Orkut-like sort of social community, aimed for students of Japanese.
  
• An Amazon-like sort of recommendation and suggestions system.
  

1. Can the organisation behind Amazon and PageRank be considered some sort of rudimentary weak AI?
   
2. What kind of problems should I expect to find?
   
3. Is it too pretentious to consider some work with PHP as being Weak AI? Mind you it's not for a computer course, so it doesn't need to be bleeding-edge technology or anything.

Sounds like a semantics issue.

What do you mean by AI?

A computer program can evaluate data and make decisions based on that evaluation. If I load up Starcraft then the units have AI, and a computer opponent has AI. But all these cases seem much more akin to a windmill turning in the data than 'thinking'

They do not operate under any form of Artificial Intelligence; just some complex algorithms. It's really just that "simple".

He's right, theres nothing autonomous about this technology. The creators of Amazon didnt "train" it to determine what someone would like to see, it just associates two products with each other (which was programmed by an individual) and throws it on the screen.

Here are a few solid examples of what I'm planning:

1. In the social community, people will be joining, but there's a risk of having spammers and fake profiles.

I think its safer to just say "i'm going to have a program that will..."

So i'd just substitute 'ai' with 'program' and most people will be on the same page as you.

i think you should also do some research on data mining, statistical analysis, and numerical algorithms that involves some popular functions from calculus.

Maybe the thing that might sound confusing here is the fact that I'm talking about "Weak AI" i.e. it's going to perform just a few tasks based on a few algorithms, a process which I understand as being analogous to the process of thinking but, even in that sense, it's not going to be pathetic compared to most robots out there.

But how can you create artificial intelligence without real intelligence? How can you even define intelligence if there is none?

They don't make strawberry-flavoured yogurt with real Strawberries, do they? That's the miracle of creating something artificial without the real source.

Yes, but if you didn't know what strawberries tasted like would you still be able to create strawberry yoghurt? Besides, around here there are real strawberries in strawberry yoghurt.

Well, I drink red currant juice, and I've got no idea of what kind of fruit red currant is (other than something popular in France).

Pretzels? Heh, are they common in Finland? Here all we've got is that "Mr. Pretzels" franchise, but their pretzels are kinda exotic to me.
