Review: David Morales @ Sonic (Open - Close)

1/10.

Fucking awful. Thank god LoL is tonight, i have to wash that memory out of my head.

HORRIBLE MIXING. Fucking headache.

I don't have to say any more. I hope you all enjoyed it.

I thought I saw you there...

I had an awesome time. I thought Morales played a great set. He got a bit too circuity at times (especially at the end), but over all it was a very well done set. The vibe was awesome too. David really knows how to work a crowd. Sure, he had some bad mixes, but over all I'd say his mixing was awesome.

Highliight of the fucking night: REM - Losing My Religion (? remix - can anyone ID this?). Wow, did the place (and Morales himself) go off to this track. One of the best clubbing moments of this year for sure.

Hats off to Morales. Just more proof why I should make an effort to check him out every time he's in town.

Some great tunes played more than once... Strange! Overall a great night. Morales'mixing near the end of the night was quite unique. His 2 sets prior, were much better (Sonic opening and Peep Show).

We were actually having a conversation about this afterward. I love this about Morales. The highlight of the night was Loosing My Religion. He played it again in the early morning to bring everyone back to that highlight. He also did this at Grand Opening. It's a great tactic if you ask me.

Enjoyed myself immensely... The crowd had tons of energy thanks to David... He certainly does know how to work the crowd. Great tunes, a few odd mixes.. but overall F U N !

I got to meet David Morales last night! Very kind man... Thank you so much Daniel for arranging that! You always take such good care of me!

My only complaint of the evening were the lights... How many times does the STROBE have to go on or the STADIUM lighting... its really annoying... The stadium lighting quickly turns the club into a SAUNA! The strobes... well repeatedly... reminds me of my clubbing days in the 90s...

Jeff (FLOORWHORE) so glad that you were able to make it! Feel better buddy!! CHICKEN SOUP! You need some CHICKEN SOUP!

I think it's his own remix.

I like it when DJs do this too...but only when the track worked the first time. there's nothing more annoying when a DJ plays a track you don't like 3 times in a night and it doesn't work the way they think it will.

I remember when Hex Hector headlined the Saturday night pride event back in 2002 and I can't remember what song it was, but it was one of his own remixes and he played it 3 times. Everytime I hear that song now, I get chills thinking about how great it worked that night.

It's probably Rem Losing my religion (Quentin Harris remix).

I was at Danny Krivit. I wanted to come to Sonic, but I was too dressed up. So I went to go home to change and nap, and next thing you know it was noon.

Wait, it can't be the Quentin Harris mix, can it? How did it sound?

Klago's review. I agree with him, so I may aswell just re-post it in here.

quote:
I was amazed by how he pulled out amazing track after amazing track. That Mariah Carey remix was sick. He also played Ruffneck - Everybody be Somebody. It seemed to me that I had heard elements of most of the tracks somewhere before, everything old is new again???

What had me and ravinjunkie absolutely dumbfounded was his use of the effects on the mixer. He'd put the tracks together so nicely build, build and build until the crowd is in an absolute frenzy and then he fucks it all up with some distortion effect that absolutely destroyed all that he had built up. He did this twice that I noticed and I can't really think of a reason why, unless he was trying something new. His mixing otherwise was nothing short of flawless.

Sonic is such a nice club. The decor, sound and lighting were all top notch, both of us were extremely impressed.

Meh,

It happens to every dj.

Posted by TJB on Sep-05-2006 16:13:

I guess I will just start at the beginning....

Rolled into Sonic at 1:30 with two friends and the three of us ready for the madness that we were about to take apart of. As we walked up the stairs the butterflies in my stomach were just building. I am sure most of you have realized I am a BIG Morales fan, have been for years, I knew what to expect going in and IMO he f*cking delivered.

I think I have said this about 100 times since I walked out of the club at 10:30 am, that was MY third best night at Sonic, the other two also involved David.

When I first got inside I wanted to find my spot for the night, and while I found a good spot, I just kept moving around the floor the whole night. David had me dancing the whole night; I dont think I stopped moving at all, even on the patio. Like Graham said the track of the night was definitely REM Losing my Religion, the crowd just went off. A close second would have to be Pete Heller Simpler along with this awesome sample he mixed in with it (Jeff I am hoping you remember what it was, right now my brain went remind me). Simpler has easily been the tune of the summer for me, I was on my way to the bathroom when this came on and just did such a u-turn back to the dance floor.

Earlier in the night I walked into the booth and asked David if he could play Here I Am for me. Yeah I know, you shouldnt request a track from a DJ, but I just couldnt help myself. Here I am is easily one of my favorite Morales tracks. I was waiting for it for what felt like all night, when in reality it probably wasnt. They had a stage set up at the front of the club that I decided I just had to dance on.
BEST part of the night: I walk up on stage, start dancing when all of a sudden I here it coming in HERE I AM. (I am actually getting butterflies right now writing about it) I start going crazy, I look up into the booth and I see my brother pointing and telling David to look at the stage. All I have to say is, great timing, WOW. Now I am not one to get all emotional when a track comes on in a club, but holy shit, this is just indescribable. I am also not one to get up on stage in a pretty much full club and dance (I know, I know I did it at C&C too, thats like two times in my 10 years of partying) While I was dancing on stage I should also mention that I did something to me knee and was limping around for the remainder of the evening, thank god it was only a few more hours.lol. This put a little bit of a damper on the rest of the weekend, but well worth it.

What else can I say, Tara-tunes were played all night, yes Graham a little circuity at times, but perfect for me. Give me the vocals and I am a happy camper all night long. I had awesome company all night, along with a perma smile. It was good to see the usual Sonic suspects and a few others that I totally did not expect to come out to this at all.

This man knows how to play for the crowd, he knows how to play that system, and he knows how to keep you dancing all night. Mr. David Morales thank you for the incredible night, and thank you for coming back before the end of the summer. Cant wait for October.

Ps. JON JON and HILARY Graham was not lying you guys would love him.

I've only been to Sonic once, and that was for Mylo, which was awesome. But after that night i know never to party there again, even after by-passing the line and cover charge.

But as i said in my first post, I'M GLAD YOU ENJOYED.
