Would you...........................?
Ok. So I am stood in line at Tim Hortons at King and Victoria this morning and a bum comes in and starts asking people to buy him a coffee.
He asked about 4 people who all ignored him and turned their backs until I turned around and said 'I'll buy you one'.
I got 2 medium regulars and passed him one. He thanked me and I continued to my office.
Would you have bought him a coffee?

HELL NO!!!! hahahaha...kidding, kind of
The only time I ever go to Tim's is with you Rach, so you always take care of that kind of thing for me
Yes.
on my way to the Labour of Love, a teenager came to me, while I was smoking at GO station in Mississauga. He asked me for direction to South Common Mall, which is like at least 45 minutes walk, and I could tell that he didnt have any money on him.
He never asked me for cash, he just needed directions, but i grabbed his hand, went to the bus stop, gave him 2.50 and wished him a good luck.
I will always help someone who is honest, sincere and respectful

sure, asking for coffee or a slice of pizza is better than asking for money. I hate giving money to bums but I don't mind buying them food at all.

The last time this happened to me, I offered to buy the guy something to eat...it was AT the Timmies counter on Dundas and University..he told me he would rather have the money, because he wanted to go somewhere else to eat!
I doubt it!

Yes and I would give money, not giving them money because you dont know what they will do with it is sort of odd...there is still no doubt in MOST cases that they are dirt poor, living on the street and in need of money; that seems to be my criterion for helping a fellow human who may have a drug addiction or a drinking problem or even a aversion to eating at Tim Hortons.
That was very kind indeed to help that person and the extra bonus of letting the others who didn't, know that the right thing to do was just as easy a the wrong one.
(this isn't a hi-jack, I think our stories are asking the same question)
At our local corner store the other day, some sketchbag came in wanting to buy a lighter, a quick glance at her arms showed a covering of track marks.
She didn't have enough money to buy the lighter, and was sketching out big time. She wouldn't take any matches, and was starting to have a meltdown when she realized she couldn't afford it.
I bought her the lighter, and said "merry xmas". There is no doubt in my mind what the lighter was being used for, and I'm still not sure if I did the right thing buying it for her.

I hate walking through the Entertainment District at night because I ALWAYS get asked for money multiple times by the gangstas hanging out on the streets (I'm trying not to be racist here, but let's face it, it's mostly Black people). Not only that, but you give one a fucking loonie, and instantly like 3 more of his friends come up and ask for more. WTF? I'm not a fucking bank machine. It's a tricky situation because they're a lot harder to ignore than the bums, and can actually beat the shit out of me if I tell them rudely to fuck off. So yeah, I'd buy a bum a coffee, but I wouldn't give them money.

Hmmm, although this is a tough question , and most people will sat no , I would depending on the situation. In montreal I find it to be worse then here so I am used to them and gave given them money, but it's never a lot. This one bum @ the CoachCanada/Greuhound terminal in Mtl always opens the door for you and hands you a Mtl Gazette ( where he gets them I don't know ) So people usually give hime some change. If they ask me for a little bit of food, sure, but when it comes down to something big or big money, no.
What really boggles my mind is when you give them some change and they say " can I have more?" or , " That's it? ". I've also had a few bums fallow me because I said " Sorry, I don't have change. " When I REALLY DIDN'T.
Yeah, I always talk to crazies but I have been burned by it before.
A mentalist on the subway was talking to me and I can't be rude so I started to have a conversation (if stilted) with him. All was well until he started to tell me about his penchant for deer hunting, and I quote;
"I don't kill them though, just maim them"
This is devastating to me, I have 5 pets and I am vegetarian - I wanted to cry! Guess it served me right for humouring the freakshow.
Oh, and I forgot to mention, the bum this morning told me he had to get the subway after I had bought him coffee. I guess he wanted money from me too. I didn't have any more change though - funny how even after you have bought them something, they can still make you feel bad.
On a lighter note, I saw Zanta yesterday outside Bikkuri, we were going for sushi at lunch and he stood in front of me and gyrated whilst grunting and telling me I was "Sexxxxy in that suit, lady". Rachel's still got it, oh yeah baby, still got it.

I work at a beer store just north of regent park and all day long I see what people do with the money they collect on the street. It makes me hate drinking almost. People have no teeth, and come in everyday multiple times until eventually we have to cut them off and they throw a huge temper tantrum.
Rachel's case is a bit different, since they just wanted a coffee, but usually I don't give people anything.
When I was living in Montreal last summer, I was kinda lost one day. A gang of like 7 homeless people kinda circled me and told me to give them money. I felt a bit intimidated. So I said, "I will give you money if you give me directions!!!!" They drew out a detailed map of where I was trying to go, and they gave me an in depth explanation of how to get there. I gave them a few pennies and nickels, and quickly went on my way!
Probably not. Once in a while depending on the individual and the situation I might though.
Ive given a dollar or two serval times to bums that have come up to me at the downtown Bay and Dundas bus terminal over the years when I used to have to bus it to TO
