'Goat-free roads made me speed'

A Swiss man caught speeding on a Canadian highway has blamed his actions on the absence of goats on the roads.

The man was caught driving at 161 km/h (100mph) in a 100 km/h (60mph) zone.

A traffic officer's notes said the Swiss driver had said he was taking advantage "of the ability to go faster without risking hitting a goat".

Canadian police spokesman Joel Doiron said he had never found a goat on the highways of eastern Ontario in his 20 years of service.

"Nobody's ever used the lack of goats here as an excuse for speeding," Mr Doiron told the AFP news agency.

"I've never been to Switzerland, but I guess there must be a lot of goats there," he said.

The driver was ordered to pay a fine of C$360 ($330; 175) for speeding.

Woman guilty of attack with dead puppy
Sep. 7, 2006. 05:41 AM
ASSOCIATED PRESS

ST. LOUIS A woman accused of pummelling a dog breeder over the head with a dead Chihuahua puppy was found guilty of misdemeanour assault and trespassing.

Lisa Hopfer, 34, faces up to 18 months in jail and a $1,500 (U.S.) fine. She was convicted Wednesday.

The trial featured X-rays and pictures of the dead dog, and testimony from Linda Hulsey, who said Hopfer hit her at least 30 times on June 7 with the corpse of the Chihuahua she sold to Hopfer.

Hopfer told police that after buying the puppy, which she said Hulsey told her was six weeks old, a veterinarian said it was only four weeks old and needed to be returned to its mother. The dog died before Hopfer could return it.

Police said Hopfer pushed her way inside Hulsey's home and confronted Hulsey, 33. Later, Hopfer took the dog out of a plastic bag and started hitting Hulsey over the head with it, police said.

Hopfer now has a new dog, she said, also a Chihuahua.

"She's doing great," she said.

the tone of the writing is as funny as the story is bizarre.

so some fucking mental case beat a shadey dog breeder over the head with the corpse of a dog purchased from her...but they conclude by noting that the nut job has a new dog and it's doing great, LOL...I love it.

I hate irresponsible dog breeders! I would have beaten him around the head with a fucking hammer if he had given me a puppy 2 weeks too soon.

I don't think the woman is that mental, just devastated. Imagine taking a healthy puppy into your care and it dying because it shouldn't have been taken from mummy.

Like I said, fucking hammer.

+1

Although i understand she was upset i still wouldn't have used the corpse of my puppy to beat up the breeder. Hammer yes, but not that!

Man bites panda after zoo attack

A drunken Chinese tourist says he bit a panda who attacked him after he jumped into a zoo enclosure to "hug" the bear.

Zhang Xinyan, 35, had drunk four draught beers before deciding to enter the Beijing Zoo pen belonging to six-year-old male panda Gu Gu.

The startled Gu Gu bit both legs of his intruder, who responded by biting "the panda on its back", Mr Zhang was quoted by state media as saying.

Mr Zhang said he had not realised pandas could be violent.

He told the Beijing Morning Post that he had come to the Chinese capital "only to see the pandas".

"The seven-hour train ride was exhausting, and I drank bottles of beer when I arrived then had a nap," he added.

Punishment

The newspaper said Mr Zhang had a "sudden urge" to touch Gu Gu with his hand, so he jumped over the waist-high railing into the enclosure.

"When he got closer and was undiscovered, he reached out to hug it," the newspaper added.

Mr Zhang was bitten first on his right leg, and then on his left.

Newspaper photographs showed him lying on a hospital bed with blood-soaked bandages over his legs.

"I bit the panda on its back but its fur was too thick," Mr Zhang recalled.

He went on: "No one ever said they would bite people. I just wanted to touch it."

Zoo spokeswoman Ye Mingxia said the panda was unharmed and they were not considering punishing Mr Zhang yet.

"He's suffered quite a bit of a shock," she told the Associated Press by telephone.

First penis transplant comes unstuck

Ian Sample in London
September 19, 2006

A CHINESE man who had the world's first penis transplant had the organ removed two weeks later because he and his wife had a "severe psychological problem" with his new penis.

The man's penis was damaged beyond repair in an accident this year, leaving him with a one centimetre-long stump with which he was unable to urinate or have sexual intercourse.

"His quality of life was affected severely," said Dr Weilie Hu, a surgeon at Guangzhou General Hospital.

Doctors spent 15 hours attaching a 10-centimetre penis to the 44-year-old man after the parents of a brain-dead man half his age agreed to donate their son's organ.

The procedure, described in a case study due to appear in the journal European Urology next month, represents a big leap forward in transplant surgery.

After 10 days, tests revealed the organ had a rich blood supply and the man was able to urinate normally. Although the operation was a surgical success, surgeons said they had to remove the penis two weeks later.

"Because of a severe psychological problem of the recipient and his wife, the transplanted penis regretfully had to be cut off," Dr Hu said.

An examination of the organ showed no signs of it being rejected by the body, he said.

Jean-Michel Dubernard, the French surgeon who this year performed the world's first face transplant on a woman who had been attacked by a dog, said psychological factors were a serious issue for many patients receiving certain "allografts", or organs from donors. "Psychological consequences of hand and face allografts show that it is not so easy to use and see permanently a dead person's hands, nor is it easy to look in a mirror to see a dead person's face," Dr Dubernard wrote in European Urology.

"Clearly, in the Chinese case the failure at a very early stage was first psychological. It involved the recipient's wife and raised many questions."

In 2001, surgeons were forced to amputate the world's first transplanted hand from Clint Hallam, a 50-year-old New Zealander, who said he wanted the "hideous and withered" hand removed because he had become "mentally detached" from it.

Andrew George, a transplant expert at Imperial College London, said: "Doing a penis transplant should be no more complex than anything else. But it takes time for nerve sensations to kick in and it's not clear whether the patient would ever be able to have sex with it."

Iranian leader 'not anti-Semite'
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at press conference at UN [21 Sept]
Mr Ahmadinejad said he respected Jews "very much"
Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said he is not an anti-Semite.

"Jews are respected by everyone, by all human beings," he told a news conference at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The remarks come months after Mr Ahmadinejad called for Israel to be wiped off the map - and described the Holocaust as "myth".

In response to questions about Iran's controversial nuclear programme, he said the Iranians "do not need a bomb".

The Iranian president's comments on anti-Semitism came during remarks on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"Some people think if they accuse me of being anti-Jew they can solve the problem.

"No, I am not anti-Jew," he said. "I respect them very much."

"Let us remember that there in Palestine there are Muslims, Christians and Jews who live together," he said.

Later, he added: "We love everyone in the world - Jews, Christians, Muslims, non-Muslims, non-Jews, non-Christians... We are against occupation, aggression, killings and displacing people - otherwise we have no problem with ordinary people."

I really laugh at this guy. I mean, how can anyone take this guy seriously?
