How long did it take you guys to know that you're doing just fine?

I'm asking because I'm frustrated . Of course, there is no EZ BUTTONZ LOLZ, I'm not asking for that. I'm just curious about how long it took you guys to know your music is starting to sound better?

about 7 months. really only getting the hang of eq now. my eqing was shit ofr ages but ive been practicing and practicing and now im starting to enjoy my productions.

About a year or so..after messing around for a bit. Improved in mixing skills and such just about a year ago =)

OVer the last couple of weeks I think i grasped the essence of music production. If there was one secret, one tip I could give anyone on music prod. it would be this:


DELETE WHAT DOESNT SOUND GOOD
KEEP WHAT SOUNDS GOOD

It gets better with every new track. So a couple of months at a time.

Not true. Save everything, because errors are the things you learn from. And if you ever feel you haven't progressed at all just take a listen to the bad ones - and who knows, maybe one of those bad sounding ditties evolves into something good some day.

3-4 years.

After a couple of years of being into this I'am only just starting to put my first track together so well see how it goes.

A lesson I had to learn the hard way.

Deleting any of my efforts feels bad now, I really hate when I remember something I made only to find out I deleted it. You never know how you'll feel about songs in the future, so just keep them.

did the same myself. deleted all my old stuff and one of my recent ones that was good just needed eqed properly.

Definately when I scan through albums for a decent track to listen to; makes me realise how much shite is out there and actually when I'm unsatisfied with my works it's because I'm comparing it to some serious pro tunes.

In terms of comparing it to my older stuff, I have to use my memory because I also got pissed off and deleted it. But I won't anymore because it's a good reference.

Iv always kept my stuff and its fun to listen back on stuff you thaught was great/pro and its nothing compared to what you can do now.

everyone progresses on a different level

but what i hear a lot is if it sounds good go with it

there is no golden rule study this follow this read this book

once you know the basics and the essential keys to making music just put them all together and do what sounds good when you know all of the essential things and can put them all together to make a track
then thats when you know.

I suppose it depends on what your standard for "fine" is, but I think your bar should always be set higher than where you are now. The trick is to keep it only slightly higher so you don't demotivate yourself.

if u do something and in a technical way it sucks biggg timmeee!!
it doesnt matter! thatll get with time and learning
but if u get something always sterile, lifeless. than u should worry!

Started E:mortal about 14 months ago. It was shite in the start, today Im feeling confident in my sound

Its been loads of hard work and dedication.

Now I can start concentrating on making it even better

Been at it 3 years and only in the last year have I started to think I've somewhat turned the corner from utter shit to something worth listening to.

i'm not there yet... still couldn't finish 1 damn song for months!

Took a long time. We never were sure if our music was ok the way it is,
if people really liked.

Until we got signed. This was very helpful for us, because we learnt that are going into the right direction with our music.
