Saints sack Thomas

Subject says it all....

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.a...64-1702,00.html

Apparently Soups met with the board after the poor performance and it was all over.

Hmmm, I'm an avid saints fan and that doesn't surprise me at all. Maybe it's time for a change down there. There's nothing worse than unrealised potential and that's what we have currently. This could all work out for the better or turn the saints administration into disarray like it was only a few yrs back.

my honours supervisor would be happy with that, doesn't think thomas had the goods for top level coaching. any ideas who is in the running now?

About time.
Too much talent in that team for the results they have gotten.

must be something about supervisors, mine is a Saints fan too. He's conveniently disappeared this week

Probably Mark Harvey who is currently assistant or John Longmire also currently assistant. Mark Thompson must be feeling pretty lucky.

bah saints team bit over-rated i think.

i don't think he deserved it at all. bit drastic. if they had won first round finals, but say they went out next round, do you think they'd still have sacked him?

harsh but true, he was a game away from keeping his job. I say get Stewie Lowe and Nicky Winmar in the box and Dal Santo as capt., they'll whip their arses into a grannie for sure

bout time they got rid of that hack country coach

Posted by sLiCk_NiCk on Sep-12-2006 13:17:

it was a matter of time before they got rid of him.

he built a decent squad and its unlucky he didnt achieve a whole lot with them. he brought the saints from a cellar dwellar to a victorian force with the good pickups in drafts gone by.

he just didnt know how to manage the players to well on the field and was unlucky to cop serious injuries to key players every year!

i think mark harvey would be good for them. his been in the coaching caper for a while now and is the brains behind freo's rise me thinks

kind of undecided as to whether this is a good move or not... only time will tell i spose

as long as Danny Frawley doesnt come back to Moorabbin...

Posted by sLiCk_NiCk on Sep-12-2006 14:16:

*news just in*

FRAWLEY THE FRONT RUNNER

would u like spit with that?

Posted by PauLie_C on Sep-12-2006 14:21:

best thing st kilda has done in ages, there weak link was there pathetic coach, as long as they dont sign frawley, they will have a premiership in the next 2 years

Posted by Ghostface on Sep-12-2006 22:15:

Geez who in their right mind would get Frawley, such an outstanding record in taking Richmond to the wooden spoon and record losing streak. Garry lyon has also been mentioned, I don't know what he'd be like but it is probably inevitable he coaches at AFL level eventually, maybe he is waiting for Neale Daniher to screw up again though.

I watched St Kilda last Friday and West Coast the week before and St Kilda have got a few more years before they can seriously challenge. Harvey, Peckett, Thompson, Hamill, Gehrig are all getting pretty old and tired, and Kositche (no idea how to spell) is just so fragile. They might push up to 3rd or 4th at the best next year but it's more likely they are the team Richmond knock out of the eight in 2007.

Posted by Deeman on Sep-12-2006 23:24:

FRAWLEY?

Fk NO!!!!

I think Harvs looks the goods in my book, new blood, new ideas. I'd rather have him than some washed up hack from a previous life.

Soupa stop sitting on the fence and say what you really think..

You told me yesterday that Grant Thomas was an out of touch, balding, fat drunk that couldnt win a flag with the under 9 West Dandenong Shleppers*

*could have been me that said that

In other news, paulie c is the next timmy maher or phil cleary.

good riddance to thomas. got such a talented list and the best he could produce was a prelim final appearance?!

always the coach who suffers the wrath.

Posted by 00soups00 on Sep-14-2006 12:53:

i cant really be bothered going in to detail, but for anyone who is interested in my opinion i will share it with them in person. In summary Thomas is a businessman, he is a motivator and an excellent speaker. Ron Butterss is a typical brighton richkid, who hasnt had things gone his way, therefor he has obviously just lashed out at the closest head to the chopping block.

this really begs the question of whether a footy coach should have a technical ability and knowledge surrounding footy, or whether the coach is a leader and a motivator.

Kind of the difference in business between a leader and a manager. I personally think that Thomas falls into the 'leader and motivator' coloumn and may not have the technical footy ability or knowledge that an ayres or former afl legend would have. Hence why it would be important for the staff arouund him to be clued up with footy knowledge, which may have been the downfall as i dont think the assistant and coaching aids are as experienced as they could be.

Thomas has a deep love and a great passion for St Kilda and that is truely evident. Ron Butterss doesnt. He is a money hungry ****, who has taken his personal opinions of Thomas and exorcised his power to cut him down before he has truely had a chance to deliver.

9 players above the age of 25 and 22 players at the age of 22 or younger. We are stil a developing squad, and its unfortunate that Thomas is not still there to lead us to where we are heading....

one can only hope that this will not have too much of an impact to the player squad...

Posted by Dr P on Sep-14-2006 13:06:

you're prolly right soups....

thomas has coached a few grand finals in his time....

Posted by xtractorfan on Sep-15-2006 02:32:

To what extent can you really blame the coach for an underperforming side? Honest question since I know SFA about AFL...

Isnt it more to do with the players abilities, or lack thereof?
