First liveset - feedback appreciated

Hi guys!

Just decided to post my first ever recorded vinyl liveset. I've only had my 1210's for about two weeks, though I have been mixing using PCDJ since october 2001. The length is almost 75 minutes, and the tracklist, consisting of both new and some older tunes, goes like this:

1. Solid Sessions - Janeiro (Pronti & Kalmani Mix)
2. Blank & Jones - Secrets & Lies (Solid Sessions Mix)
3. Cyclone - Salobre (Nickelson Mix)
4. Rising Star - Startheme
5. Paul Van Dyk - For An Angel
6. Ralphie B - Massive
7. Motorcraft - When Love Will Come
8. 4 Strings - Take Me Away (Coast 2 Coast Dub)
9. Praetorian - Released (Warrior Mix)
10. Svenson & Gielen - We Know What You Did
11. DJ Shog - This Is My Sound
12. DJ Hinx - El Viento (Martin Eyerer Mix)
13. Futureforce - Euphoria
14. Brooklyn Bounce - Club Bizarre (Scot Project Mix)
15. Marco V - Godd (V-Dub)

Download the liveset here.

I would be happy to get feedback on the selection (and placement in the mix) of the individual tracks, more than the actual beatmatching, which I know is not always perfect, but I'm getting there. To my defense many of the records were beeing played or mixed for the first time, this is most noticable in the transition between "For An Angel" & "Massive", which totally got out of hand because of the structure of the tracks... I decided to post this set anyway, since many of you will obviously be able to point out other things than the beatmatching that I could have done differently as well. Comments and/or tips on equilizer control would therefore be highly appreciated, in addition to any other tips you might have.

Thanks!

Hey there...

You're in Norway? How 'bout that...

I really like your playlist. We have very similar sounds. I also spin vinyl. The track arrangement is great.

You're too hard on yourself about the beatmatching. It's actually pretty good, especially if you haven't been doing it long. The only thing is I like long transitions and yours seemed somewhat brief. This is probably fine for now, but maybe stretch them out some more? It will also allow for a smoother transition.

I'd have to really analyze your set before commenting on the eq's. At my first listen, it sounded fine. Maybe I'll listen this weekend. The rule of thumb is to kill or lower the bass on the incoming track and when bringing in the track, any adjustments should be done gradually in sync with the bars (4 beats).

If you get a chance, check out the stuff on my website.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply!

About my mixing, what I generally try to do with the bass levels, is to almost kill it on the cued track, then gradually turn it up about 1/3, then at the end of a bar slam it in to a bit past normal while quickly turning the bass down a lot (not too much though) on the live track. You commented my mixing length, well, I try to keep the transitions as lengthy as possible, but sometimes I feel it really isn't necessary. In the future, when I get more comfortable with the decks, I'll really like to do the mixes in a more progressive way, if you understand what I mean (overally more like Paul Van Dyk's "Politics of Dancing" than the usual "fading" of two songs into each other). In other words, mix a bit more "hard-house-like" than standard trance-mixing, or at least try to be as creative as possible.

By the way, nice website! Totally agree with your opinion on the music genres you play, I quote Armin (or was it PvD) when telling people what I play, that is, "electronic dance music". Mostly all kinds of trance, some progressive/tribal house tunes and a bit of techno.

that would be PvD's quote
