Most Harmful Drugs (Chart)

I came across this article and thought it would be a good share.

It lists 20 substances from most harmful to least harmful, and guess what... the good old legal drink/cigs are considered more harmful then most illigal substances

The actual article

I'm trying me some Ketamine!

How is Cannabis more dangerous than Ecstasy exactly?

Posted by waynoinsano on Sep-15-2006 22:14:

how is ketamine worse (far worse) then GHB?
they're both tranquilizer?

Posted by shanny on Sep-15-2006 22:14:

Interesting.

I couldn't tell from reading the article what the factors they considered for "harmful" were. I'm not meaning to discredit their research, I would actually like to know.

Wow, that totally answered my question!

Posted by shanny on Sep-15-2006 22:21:

I didn't say it would answer everyone's questions, i just said that everyone should actually read it.

Posted by Cosmic Fur on Sep-15-2006 22:23:

Hahah, i'm just feeling a little bitter right now. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that same article (or a very similiar one) has been posted at least 2 times here before.

Point taken.

I hadn't seen it before and thought it was a good read, didn't realize it had been around before.

OK i found the actual report from the Science and Technology Select Committee of UK

So if any one wants to read 179 pages and quicly summarize the criteria for that chart pls feel free to do so

Drug Cassification (PDF)

Drug Classification (HTML)

[edit] - okay... crap.. just saw the links there... will definitely find some time before the end of the decade to read that full huge report.

Posted by Cosmic Fur on Sep-15-2006 22:32:

Edit: daves' edit forced me to edit

I posted the link to the actual report with the criteria ...

here is the page that talks about how the assess the Harm

Here

After briefly reading through the report I will attempt a very blunt synopsis of their ideas.

Please don't be overly critical of my interpretation, I'm only trying to get the jist of what they are saying for people who don't want to read the whole thing.

They have a system based on a few factors.

1) Physical Harm- Acute, Chronic, Parenteral
2) Dependence- Intensity of Pleasure, Psychological Dependence, Physical Dependence
3) Social Harms- Inotoxication, Other social harms, healthcare costs

They do state that there is no standard tool with which to measure the different drugs and the harms that they cause.

They go into more depth but on first read, it looks like the "harms" that they are referring to are societal .

I was thinking they had a way of monitoring whether taking a cap of g was more harmful then smoking a joint.

It doesn't look like that is in here, although I haven't read the entire thing.

THE IMPORTANT THING TO NOTE:

All of these substances scored on a harm scale - which means (yes) they are all harmful. They ALL harm.

Casual or cavalier attitudes (Drug X is less harmful than Drug Y) is a very unsophisticated approach. Hopefully one has more sense than that.

rj just took the cake on that one

Posted by ChemEnhanced on Sep-16-2006 00:43:

RJ.....I think it is safe to say anyone on here knows drugs are harmful. That being said, anyone can create a harmful chart for any product.....everything can be harmful to us.

how in the hell are shrooms a class A drug?

Posted by Frenchie on Sep-16-2006 05:03:

Great find, this was one hell of an interesting read.

Heh that's what i thought when i saw that as well. Considering they are legal in the Netherlands (and quite possibly Belgium too by now - although don't quote me on that), are a 100% natural product, and are not incredibly strong or addictive for that matter i pretty much fail to see the reasoning behind an A classification.

Although i guess it's possible they might have gotten that because of the psilocybin in them. But still, when compared to crack or heroine there is a HUGE difference

*Edit*

I checked it out, looks like i was right in regards to the psilocybin:

quote:

The Law: The Drugs Act 2005 classified raw magic mushrooms - and dried or prepared 'shrooms - as Class A drugs.

The new legislation slammed down hard on the sale and distribution of magic mushrooms, with anything up to life imprisonment and an unlimited fine for supplying someone else with magic mushrooms.

Possession of magic mushrooms is up to seven years in jail and an unlimited fine and it is illegal to import, export, produce, supply, possess or possess with intent to supply magic mushrooms, in any form. Supplying growing kits is also outlawed..

Previously only dried and prepared magic mushrooms were illegal because they contained high levels or the Class A chemical psilocybin, but raw mushrooms that contain psilocybin have also been deemed illegal.

Its UK so by e they mean pure mdma (maybe mda)

not like north american e is meth, speed, tiney bit of mdma and wat else not

Posted by daves on Sep-16-2006 16:45:

my allergy pills would score higher on that scale than some of the illegal stuff.

/mmmm, benadrylllll

[edit] also, kinda funny that barbiturates score only 3rd on the scale but they are part of the chemical formula used in lethal injection

Posted by LOT2005 on Sep-17-2006 01:02:

Anyone who believes that chart is accurate ... has clearly no idea of what most of those drugs are/do. So for those of you, i suggest that you don't go by it and start chewing pills of E for breakfast and lunch just cause these ppl tell you that they are less harmfull than a glass of wine ;-)
