Originally posted by 7-4-7 he owns logic in this case that does nothing but perpetuate exactly the kind of ideas on the environment that put the US at the lowest ring on the environmental totem pole. The worst thing is that he is notorious for making claims and (humour) based on challenging the status quo, but not always does that actually make sense, and in this case he makes mroe than a punchline, he leads the worlds most ignorant people into a blind state of stupidity. I can only imagine what his take would be on terrorism, the wars, medicare. He has challenged catholics, and while the religion IS lost in a socio- cultural timewarp (i am Catholic) it, in the last decade has done little harm...however every single factory/industry/company that cried at the idea of having to adhere to Kyoto and ultimatley paid Bush off to not adhere to it, is exactly the kind the example of the mindless american commoner of which Mr Carlin leads in this rant. I hope he doesn't beleive half this shit...
Oh speaking of Carlin, he'll be doing his routine at Roy Thompson Hall on Nov 18th. Tickets are $69.50 to $89.50.
Anyone wanna go?

Originally posted by Rodrico Yes, but if you take a stand up comedy of Carlin's as literal translation of his knowledge and information on said subjects, then you are really much more idiotic than you know yourself to be. Its like taking a Shakespearing tragedy and taking it as literal history. Comedy used as a means of acquiring information should always be loosely adhered to and never taken as a fact (much like the Daily Show, or the Colbert Report) but yet it still loosely bases itself on the truth so that its not all make belief and somewhat interesting way to percieve a situation or topic. Carlin in this routine is merely making fun of the idea of enviromentalism. He finds something that people always hold sacred and twist it around to make fun of the laughable parts of any idea or topic he decides to make his routine. Much like his idol Lenny Bruce, George Carlin challanged the status quo of the early 70's, 80's stand up along with others who envisioned a modern mans comedy and talked about the important and absolute ridiculous world topics to entertain an audience yet give a different outlook on things like censorship, society, environment, politics, and the church (which sadly enough was the reason Lenny Bruce was prisoned and eventually unable to perform his routines anywhere, and then committed suicide). If you're really offended by his comments, I wonder how you would feel about Carlin's routine about RAPE. lol

Originally posted by 7-4-7 hilarious. That bit about Shakespear was brilliant, and now he is apparently not to be taken as a part of history yet his works while in most cases are considered pure fiction it is THE CONTENT OF THE FICTION THAT MAKES IT A REPRESENTATION OF THE CULTURE, SOCIETY and TIME that it was written . Example: Merchant of Venice, Fiction; yet it has been used as a context for anti-semetic beleifs of the period. Back to Carlin, first I dont like his politics, clearly you do, I think he is witty, yet I also think that he is offensive in that he has talent that is followed by lemmings who cant see the power that he weilds. Frankly I watch ALOT of comedy. I always have. Nowadays, I have seen that comedy is not as much about humour so mcuh as it seen as social/political/environment (in this case) commentary, which puts people like carlin in a realm that includes humour and commentary. It is the commentray part that I dont care for, and I am entitled to beleive that. Thanks for the coles notes on carlins wit on Environmentalism, I enjoyed it. But first he is not the first to do it, he just does the humour part of it well. that is why he is a comedic legend. Recently Dennis Miller did a piece in his most recent show that destroyed the idea of global warming; basically saying that he doesnt beleive that it is real, at all...it is a human construct, sign of liberal thinking. He was, unlike carlin, not even funny about it and he essentially lied throught the peice. Comedians as of late seem to be using their comedic license as a means to prove whatever side of the American political spectrum they wish to promote. The set was funny, but his take on it, is in my opinion the last thing americans need to think is funny, and saying that this is mockery is secondary to the problem I have with it in the first place. He is mocking a very real issue, and then mocking the very people who actually care about it. when it should be the opposite in both cases. I got the mockery, it was who he was mocking that I had the entire problem with.
