"Top Gear" Host Richard Hammond Seriously Hurt in Crash

quote:
Top Gear's Richard Hammond is seriously ill in hospital after a crash in a jet-powered car while filming for the BBC programme.

The 36-year-old presenter was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary's neurological unit.

A spokesman for the hospital said Mr Hammond was "stable".

Mr Hammond had been driving a dragster-style car capable of reaching 300mph at the former RAF airfield in Elvington, near York.

Scary stuff....hopefully he pulls through ok.
The show definately wouldn't be the same without him.

wow, thats a shame that something like this has to happen to a young fellow, especially a real cool one like richard...he's awesome host on top gear, i love each and every review he does...i just hope its not too serious and he has a speedy recovery...just goes to show the real power behind a motor vehicle...

i know it probably wasnt his fault at all...but any car can still kill ya...im not the most responsible driver myself...but you gotta know the limitations of whatever you're driving...im sure richard did and it was just something gone wrong (havent read the article yet, probably says in there) (sorry if im rambling, im just shocked really)

Mikey, he was driving a jet-powered car.

But yeah, hopefully he pulls through. top gear is an awesome show and it wouldn't be the same without him.

This is what he was driving when he crashed:

Luckily, it seems he is already in stable condition.

re: "Top Gear" Host Richard ...

Saw this earlier.

I am crushed.

Posted by Orko on Sep-21-2006 05:36:

I am sorry to hear this.

As for the test itself...don't Top Fuel Dragsters push 300mph in a quater mile? Why would they need a jet powered dragster to break that speed mark?

Posted by English Rachel on Sep-21-2006 13:42:

I can guarantee this is rocking the nation right now

Poor Richard

What's the last thing that went through his mind when he hit the dirt?

Probably the same thing Steve Irwin was thinking - "Crikey!"

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Word from a friend in the UK who was watching News 24:

quote:
Ive just been watching News 24, he has sustained significant brain injury but they are "reasonably optimistic" that he'll make a "good recovery"

quote:
The doctor treating Hammond announced on September 21 that he has a "significant brain injury". It also became clear that Hammond's co-presenter James May was originally supposed to be driving the car.

Not exactly. No disrespect to Richard, but Steve was a 'world leader' in his field. Richard is a journalist who gets to drive fast cars. The level of training the two had, was not equal.

THis is really sad news

I cant say how much I have thourally enjoyed his tv personallity on probably one of my favourtite shows. I dont watch a lot of television, but I have seen every episode of Top gear and this news breaks my heart.

Best wishes go out to him from me and gear heads everywhere.

Unhappy

poor Richard. He is so adorable too.. aww. hope he gets better so I can see him race bikes again

ORKO - Richard Hammond is a pretty talented driver too. His first career was a journalist, yes. He is soooo much more than that now.

Vehicles he owns : A left-hand drive Porsche 911, two Land Rovers, a Suzuki GSXR1000, a BMW 1150 GS, a second Porsche 911, a Porsche 928, a Morgan V6 Roadster, a 1967 Ford Mustang and several kit cars

Not bad eh...
