UFC: Hughes vs PENN
So who's going to take it?
I've underestimated Penn way to many times to say Hughes will walk away with it. but at the same time hughes has improved so much in the last few years I highly doubt that Penn will be able to control him much if at all.
I can't see it going much further than about half way through the second round, but I'm split as to who will win it. It could go either way although I'm leaning towards Hughes taking it since I think Hughes would have beaten George St. Pierre and Penn didn't perform strongly enough against GSP to convince me he can take Hughes.
.........
What other fights are people gearing up for? There should be some good ones in the next little while.
Yeah first fight i've been hyped for since the Shamrock beating (i wouldn't call that a fight).
I as much as i think Hughes is the best pound for pound fighter in the UFC I also think if there was anyone in the welterweight divison that can beat him its BJ. Similar styles and strengths. Plus BJ's beat him before. However yeah that was a couple years ago and Hughes has been getting better and BJ has been meh.
Either way I think we may finally be in a for a great fight. I'll call Hughes as the winner but would love to see an upset.
I have talked with matt hughes over email. My buddie knows him so I got the change to chat with him before the gracie fight. I honestly think hughes is going to win it first round by ground and pound. Or via submission. There is no way its going all the way to the judges
Penn looked totally finished as a fighter after GSP. He didn't look like he wanted to fight anymore.
I loved Penn in his lighter weight class days, but he's just not as fast and dynamic as he used to.
Money's on Hughes.
Hughes by TKO (strikes)
Hughes has progressed a lot since his loss to Penn...Penn also has 2 loses in his last 3 fights (granted one was to a HW) and his last 4 fights have gone to decisions. You just never know which BJ Penn is going to show up on any given night...too bad, the guy is incredibly talented, but I don't know if his heart is really in it. He either gassed or flat out stopped fighting after the 1st round loss to GSP.
There's no way I see this one going to a decision either...2nd round max.
As for other fights...I think Loiseau/Swick is the fight to watch on that card...even moreso than Hughes/Penn.
Loiseau via elbow massacre!
did you guys watch the Pride OWGP recently and see Cro Cop's vicious domination of Wanderlai Silva...I picked Cro Cop to win, but wow!!!
i hope BJ wins it. I like when theres shufflin of titles!!
mind you, id rather see George St. Pierre fighting. I love the guy! sucks he has a groin injury...
oh well good UFC ahead!
I hope they put out a fix for my FTA so i can watch UFC for free...otherwise ill have to dl it!

Online write up from mma.com:
SPOILER ALERT.... SKIP TO BOTTOM OF THIS POST IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW THE RESULTS OF THE FIRST FEW ROUNDS OF ACTION!
David Leevs. Tyson Griffin
Round 1
David Lee lands a crisp flying knee to get the action started. Griffin secures a takedown off a body lock. Griffin takes his back and forces the tapout with a rear naked choke at 1:50 of the first period.
Danny Abbadi vs. Jorge Gurgel
Round 1
Sherdog.com scores the first round 10-9 for Abbadi. Gurgel landed a right hand and worked for a kneebar and an armbar, but a clean knockdown from an Abbadi punch and a left straight that consistently beat Gurgel to the punch earns the 10-point round for Danny.
Round 2
Round two is all Gurgel. The Brazilian had Abbadi backpedaling from a lead right that found its target several times in the round. Gurgel scored a takedown and some solid ground and pound to end out the second stanza. Sherdog.com has the fight scored even as the thrid round sets to kickoff.
Round 3
More of the same in round three with Abbadi backpedaling while Jorge pushes forward. in the closing moments of the fight, Abbadi scores on a flurry that could have stolen the round. Gurgel scores a takedown as the horn sounds to end the battle and gain the nod on two of the judges's scorecards.
29-28 x2 for Gurgel, 29-28 for Abbadi. Jorge's gutsy takedown in the final second may have been the difference in the close fight.
Mario Neto vs. Eddie Sanchez
Round 1
Jason Dent vs. Roger Huerta
Round 1
Joe Lauzon vs. Jens Pulver
Round 1
Lauzon scores a single leg takedown in the opening seconds. Jens escapes to his feet the grabs the cage to avoid being taken down again. The foul fails and he is taken down anyways. Jens again works to his feet but catches a left hook right on the button that puts him to sleep. Lauzon wins by knockout at 0:48 of the first.
Jason Lambert vs. Rashad Evans
Round 1
Rashad rushes in to clinch but Lambert defends well with single wrist control. Evans scores a takedown but Lambert works back to his feet. Evans picks Lambert up slams him to the mat into side-control. Jason works for a Kimura but Evans stays put in side position and defends. Both fighters back to their feet. Lambert now pushing Evans against the fence while working for a single leg takedown. Another takedown from Evans. Sherdog.com scores the first round 10-9 for Rashad.
Round 2
Fast takedown from Evans into his opponents guard. Lambert again tries for a Kimura but Rashad escapes. Evans explodes into a double leg and gains mount shortly after. Evans lands a flurry of heavy strikes from the mount that knock Lambert out.
Gabe Ruediger vs. Melvin Guillard
Round 1
Guillard sprawls to avoid several Ruediger takedown attempts in the first minute of the fight then lands a takedown of his own. Left hook stuns Ruediger. Gabe has a mouse over his left eye from a standing elbow delivered by his opponent. Melvin grabs the fence to defend a takedown. Ruediger scores a takedown. He moves quickly to mount then Guillard gives up his back. Ruediger working for a rear naked as the round expires. Sherdog.com scores it 10-9 for Ruediger for the near finish at the end of the round.
Round 2
Guillard finds his range in the second round with punches. He landed two straight rights to the body within 30 seconds of each other, the second of which collapsed his opponent. Guillard then landed a soccer kick to the shoulder, forcing Herb Dean to stop the fight at 1:01 of the second round.
now regarding the questions about Pride FC...
What's happening is that Pride is coming to Vegas and as such they are bringing some of thier big stars to fight the US guys.
more info at http://www.pridefc.com/pride2005/us_fightcard.htm
it is happening on the 21st of Oct as mentioned earlier and will be avail. on PPV in North America.
I think henderson and belford will be the best fight on this card! The rest of them don't really excite me much anymore.

^^^ indeed (rumour of an injury, but I think that he gassed...that sub attempt took everything out of him)
respect to BJ for rounds 1 and 2...he hit Hughes with some clean shots and Hughes was quite likely saved by the bell in round 2 when BJ had him in a triangle choke and arm bar. But, as in the GSP fight, Penn gassed. This guy's conditioning appears to be well below where it should be.
Hughes started schooling him with jabs and eventually on the ground had trapped both his arms and punched him FORTY times in the head before the ref finally called it. BJ was helpless and had no way to defend himself and no energy to even attempt to get out of that position. Good stoppage by the ref. granted they weren't all hard shots, but ask any boxer what 40 unaswered jabs (with nearly bare fists) would feel like, lol.
Penn has very good standup, incredible take-down defense and is a jiu-jitsu god on the ground with his freakish flexibility...his weakness appears to be is his lack of conditioning (and focus sometimes). This guy could hang with anyone 185lbs and under if he wanted.
There's talk on the Sherdog forums that he separated a rib at some point in round 2 and didn't even tell his corner, for whatever that's worth (irrelevant, IMHO, since he got injured during the fight and that's part of the game).
Other highlights:
- very impressed with Rashad Evans progress...the guy has gone from a boring wrestler who just smothers his opponents for decision wins to a capable standup fighter who is able to finish on the ground. Convincing win over Lambert (who many favoured to beat him)
- Loiseau disappointed me with how tentative he was in rounds 1 and 2...he was owning Swick in round 3 and if this was a 5 round fight (hell if there was even 1 more round) I have NO doubt he would have won. Good comeback showing after his beating from Franklin last time, but he needs to come out more agressive. Swick rightfully got the win, 2 rounds to 1.
- Jens Pulver...big anticipated return to UFC (former champ who never actually lost his belt in the UFC)...KO by a clean punch from Lauzon.
I'm very much looking forward to Rich Franklin vs. Anderson Silva coming up...
I don't know how you guys can watch this.
