Networking help

Ok here is my story see if you can help.

I have a sony viao laptop that is 4 years old. The burner dont work. It reads cds, plays cds but you cant burn anything to the cd. Ive tried to uninistall the nero software and reinstall it did not work. I deleted the cd driver and reinstalled it, that didnt help. I bought a cd cleaner and that didnt work.

so my gf's mom and dad moved out of the country and gave us their old hp desk top. It has a working cd burner. I want to network my laptop with the desk top. I tried to do it thru the my network icon on my laptop but it messed up my wireless connection and all kinds of crap it took me 2 days to get it working right again and i still dont have a network.

The desk top has no t1 line only phone and usb connections and it has windows 200o i think. My laptop has usb,t1, and phone connections. Is there a way for me to link them to one another so i can move files from the laptop to the desk top so i can burn some cds? Or am i screwed?

First of all it's not T1 line it's an ethernet port.

I suggest you go out and buy a network card for the desktop you can get them for like 20 bucks or so.

t1 ethernert whatever shows you how pc smart i am.

The network card is that wireless? and would that require me to take the desktop apart to install pr just plug in to a usb slot?

You can get a regular network card ( with the ethernert port ) which would require you to open the computer case, but I do think there might be some usb cards like that.

Or you could get a wireless usb adapter.

I'll post product links later to give you a better idea.

its not to hard to do is it. I a non-pc savvy person should be able to make it work?

also since you seem to know what you are talking about how impt is it to beef up my wireless security? Im having a tuff time installing the wap or wep stuff for my wireless router. I was thiniking if someone wants your stuff they will find a way to get it right.

What operating system are you using (on both bcomputers)? It is easyer to do some than others.

Also it is possible that both the laptop and desktop have lan ports buit in check that before buying new stuff.

The easiest way to transfer files between your 2 PCs is to do it with an USB key.
Even with a small sized key, you can split big files with Winrar multi-part archives option.
If you had better notions in computer, we could help you more, but here it's all I can suggest you.

yeah usb flash drive is an awesome idea!

You can get a 512 meg one for cheap anyhow in the states.
You should do that it'll save you the trouble.

it would, but it would require you to buy either

a. a pci/usb ethernet card.
b. a pci/usb wireless card.

wireless settings could be a bitch. depends on how its setup.

This is only the material part.

With an ethernet card, you will still need a crossed ethernet cable, or two staight ethernet cables with a hub (or a switch or a router).

And once you have it, you will need to configure your network, and if you don't have some skills in it, you will surely loose a lot of time and maybe can't be able to do it at all without help of somebody.
Because it includes configuring IP addresses, subnet mask, desactivating the firewalls or configuring it, configuring Win XP and Win2000 share folders...

USB key is easier and cheaper. Or buy a new CD burner for your laptop

wouldnt it just be as simple as buying two usb cables and a usb hub?
plug&freaking play...

or you could pull the burner out of the desktop, buy a case for it with a usb port off ebay and just use it as an external drive
