Music genres

I'm categorizing my music collection and i'm having trouble managing to classify certain songs.
Some site with music genres and samples would be perfect.
Discogs lists electronic but has no subgenres =S
Anyone know anything helpful?

If it is your collection...

why not make up your own categories?

what better system of organization can you have, than the one you have made yourself?

My categories

Good - Meh - Bad

and under "good" i sepatate it further into -fast- -slow-
and under fast and slow I have terms like -dirty- -happy- -boomy- etc

and I know exactly where to find whatever I feel like hearing at any given moment.

Trance
house
techno
breakbeat

These are at the top of the list of electronica if thats the type of music collection you have.

I just do it by artist in alphabetical order. Makes it easy to find whatever I'm after. Lots of artists make music in more than one genre anyway, so I don't end up with my shit all over the place.

jaja that's the best way to do it.

You gotta organize themusic the way you feel it.

I do like this also, it works perfect =)

Nope. Not at all. Nothing like that exists anywhere.

DANCERECORDS.COM/ has samples and is categorized by genres & subgenres. The only problem is that sometimes theres more than 1 subgenre listed to describe a sample, so you have to use your best guess.

Acid
Bad Acid? (Such a thing!)

i arrange them in seven main categories: techno, house, trance, downbeat, jungle, breaks, hardcore and eight which is other. under other i put artists like aphex twin, squarepusher, dextro, william orbit, ochre... my advice is don't go into the subgenres because you'll loose your mind

Indeed, those are mostly very accurate. Dont see the problem with it either.

Not really. They can be labeled by anyone whether they know what they're doing or not.

True, but judging by my own experience they are pretty accurate. The stuff i checked out the last year or so pretty much was correct labeled.

this is everything that is wrong with people and edm today, trying to pigeon hole everything, every track will have its on "genre" soon......

Posted by RenderedDream on Sep-26-2006 18:50:

it's not meant for EDM, just electronica (triphop, etc)
