Breaking them in...

I've got a very close friend who is intrigued by EDM and would really like to get into it. Problem is, this is the deep South of America and EDM is nearly non-existent. So of course, I have been charged with the task of exposing them to the genre. So I'm here to ask - how would you go about this? They've pretty much listened to mainstream rock/alternative stuff and some rap/hip-hop as well. For a while I thought house would be the easiest way to break them in but I'm never done this before. Opinions/suggestions/flames?

Have a party/gathering. Include beer/whatever. Play some tunes that YOU think your friend might enjoy (you know your friend better than anyone else here).

Just create a nice vibe. Good company, good tunes, and the rest of the story writes itself

edit: Do a BBQ. Everyone loves a BBQ. It seems to create a good vibe all on its own.

There's more EDM deep south than there is where you live. It's made by black people though. I guess that's why you think it doesn't exist.

Well, I find the Tiesto early ISOS CDs to be great at introducing people into EDM. In fact one of my friends listened to ISOS3 for over 6 months before moving on to something different, which was ISOS1

Also, he has said to me that PvD's TPOD2 is on the top of his list, so that may be a good idea too.

Some Swedish House Mafia sets might work as well

I don't blame him, ISOS 1 is the best album ever. I usually don't get emotional but I always get this feeling like I want to cry by the time Sun is shining comes around. (and no not because it sucks lol)

remixes remixes remixes.

also play the stuff you love around them as much as possible. Pretty soon if they're ever going to like it, they'll point out a song or two out of the stuff you like that they have a hint of admiration for.

Very true. But sometimes people hate EDM remixes of their favorite tracks, saying that it got ruined...can you believe it? Justin Timberlake - Sexyback RUINED by Armand van Helden? Or Britney Spears - Someday RUINED by Leama & Moor??? Some people just don't deserve to be alive.

Yeah I agree, most people I know who aren't fully into electronic music seem to hate the dance remixes

Do what I did. Give him a few tracks from different catagories of EDM (3 '99ish "epic" trance, 3 prog trance (early tracks in ASOT, for example), 3 groovier prog house tracks, 3 electro tracks, 3 remixes of other genres (the Thin White Duke remix of The Killers "Mr. Brightside", for example)...etc... use beatport to help you decide what genre something is if you're not sure. Give them to him and let him decide what he likes, then you take that info and go from there. This method helped me convert two people.

LOL

It's a her. But thanks for all the advice. I think I'm going to go for the samplings of each sub-genre deal.

Hope all goes well with your recruiting.

If they like hip hop, then jungle'll probably be an easy sell.
