I bought a low level Toshiba and upgraded hardware (basically, RAM and audio card myself). It has been great for everything from graphic design to low-level production, but I wouldn't reccomend gaming unless you're playing games that arent very graphic intensive. If you plan to play hardcore games on a laptop, I believe alienware is the way to go, but dont expect it to be quiet or light...

Psh, it hasnt even been open 10 days yet, and most of the tech conversation has gone here. This type of thing is worthy of an announcement of some sort, Id say

mac osX is a dream you'll love it. Their hardware is quailty but its pricey. No idea about Dell but your decision should be based on what software you want to use and what platform they run on.

Hmmm..I must not live in the COR...

Anyways, I reccomend the Toshiba Sattelite line with an extra gig of ram snapped into your model. Dell is overpriced, but if you need the service plan, they may be a viable option. Dual boot between Windows XP and your favrite linux distro and you should be fine
