UofT prof officially gets greenlit to.. um... I forget... what was I sayin?

Anyone have this proffessor? I'd love to hear about his 10-joint-a-day lectures!

Pot-smoking prof lights up a room
Given his own space in basement
Needs to smoke for health reasons

For years, University of Toronto Professor Doug Hutchinson smoked pot in his office.

Sometimes he'd hide behind garbage dumpsters or even climb trees to use the drug, which he said he needs to alleviate the pain from an undisclosed medical condition.

Now he's out of the closet and in the basement of the university's Trinity College, where he can finally smoke in peace and without recrimination all with the blessing of U of T.

"It's a beautiful solution," Hutchinson said yesterday, at the end of a messy year-long battle with college officials.

It's also rekindled in him the fire to fight what he calls complicated and often-contradictory laws governing the use of marijuana in Canada by those who use it both medically and recreationally.

"I'm feeling lighter," said Hutchinson, 50, who teaches ancient Greek philosophy and specializes in the works of Plato. "It was burdensome being in the closet."

On any given day, between classes and students, he smoked up to 10 joints a day, or roughly an ounce of marijuana a week.

But Hutchinson got busted late last year after someone complained about the smell coming from his second-floor office, which overlooks the quadrangle of Trinity College.

"The first reaction (from college officials) was this has to stop, and I said, `No, this doesn't have to stop,'" he said.

"They tried to get me to admit to past offences and swear never to offend again," he said.

it's also interesting how some idiots still can't comprehend the chemical difference between non-carcinogenic marijuana smoke with cigarette smoke.

Medical condition or not, 10 joins a day is quite a bit. He's basically high whenever he's teaching. alcohol is perfectly legal, yet they don't let teachers teach drunk, do they?

Posted by MarkT on Sep-26-2006 21:26:

agreed.

I'm rather surprised that it's condoned by the university, assuming it's legal in the first place (to smoke pot on school property, while working...he has the necessary papers allowing him to smoke pot, but while at work and on work property?).

It drives me insane when people refuse to acknowledge, or simply can't comprehend, the difference between pot smoke and cigarette smoke.

criticize him being allowed to blaze while at work..but don't compare it to cigarette smokers being forced to smoke outside, as those are two very separate issues.

Rastafarianism?

Hah! Nice. What's wrong with what the prof is teaching? Ancient Greek Philosophy? That's genius if he's teaching that while high.

Exactly!

Ancient Greek Phly is excruciatingly hard while sober-->I've been doing it for 3 yrs....I can't even imagine trying to do it high haha, but like I said, he delivered a great lecture yesterday........but the prof has smoked so much by now he probably doesn't get too stoned....awesome nonetheless

so im forced to breathe marijuana smoke but not tobacco smoke?

u cant have one without the other. One of the major reasons people supported the tobacco law was because it made them "smell bad". Id say pot is 100X worse in that department

Posted by Orko on Sep-26-2006 22:39:

haha, and after the conservatives cut the government research into medical uses for pot.

Posted by adi26 on Sep-26-2006 23:09:

I think in all these universities...most of the writing and literature professors are all stoners....I always notice smiles on their faces all the time, they look way too chill to be interested anything but their poetry, they eat a lot and are generally fat...

oh and 10 joints???? lol...wow

1. the prof is allowed to blaze in his ventilated office...not anywhere he wants on campus, correct? so whose marijuana smoke are you being forced to breathe, given that you're neither in his class nor would you be forced to be in his office while he smoked if you were in a class of his.

2. the number of people who are legally permitted to smoke pot, for what is deemed a legitimate medical purpose, is exponentially smaller than the number of cigarette smokers out there...and they also are not permitted to do it wherever they want, correct?

I think you'll be fine Jay...no one is making you hang out in his office...and there aren't hundreds of thousands of medical marijuana smokers out there lighting up all over the place and harming you.

I think you can understand reasonable exceptions to general rules...or are you interested in trading in your good health for MS, HIV, cancer or any of the other illnesses for which these permits are granted?

It relieves pain from MS...it provides HIV patients with an appetite that their drug therapy takes away...etc. Exactly what tangible health benefit is cigarette smoking providing it's user other than "I want to smoke a cigarette"?

I think your arguments here are completely without merit.

I also think the main and valid concern here may be that he's possibly permitted to lead a class while stoned. I'd hope that the university has audited his class to ensure that students are receiving the education for which they've paid (and that taxpayers have subsidized), assuming anyone has even questioned his ability to do so in the first place.
